Basinski, Plassard Lead Wooster to 3-1 Weekend at Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic

The College of Wooster volleyball team christened newly-renovated Timken Gymnasium with a pair of wins on Friday, and for the weekend, the Fighting Scots went 3-1 during the program's annual Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic.

Friday's debut went as planned for Wooster (10-3), as the Fighting Scots swept aside Bethany College (W.Va.) 25-20, 25-23, 25-21. Senior Ashley Plassard led the way at the net with a team-high 10 kills, and hit .316 on the afternoon. Defensively, Wooster held Bethany to .042 attack percentage for the match, including two frames at .025 or lower. Three Scots reached double-digits in digs, including seniors Gabrielle Basinski and McKenzie Reese, who had 15 each. Sophomore Meghan Botsch assisted on 30 of Wooster's 37 kills and tallied seven digs.

In the nightcap, Wooster went the distance against Adrian College, and came out on the right end of a 15-25, 25-10, 25-9, 25-19, 15-11 seesaw thriller. Botsch's strong defensive effort led the charge, as the sophomore setter surpassed 20 digs for the second time this season, and paired that with 30 assists. Basinski, who was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of play on Saturday, had 20 digs on the tally sheet, while Reese (14) and senior Jordan Murray (13) both factored in heavily on defense as well. Offensively, first-year Katie Billetdeaux and senior Eleri Miller smashed down 10 kills each.

Gabrielle Basinski
Senior Gabrielle Basinski averaged over five digs per set this weekend.

Westminster College tripped up Wooster 25-18, 16-25, 29-27, 25-20 in Saturday's opener. Billetdeaux and Plassard accounted for over half of Wooster's 48 kills with 14 and 11, respectively. Basinski continued to pile up the digs with 23, while Botsch and Reese had 14 each. Other stats to note from the Westminster match include 10 blocks by the Scots, who were led by Plassard's five.

Senior Marija Cyvas and Plassard were nearly unstoppable at the net in the weekend finale, as the duo combined for 32 kills on 62 swings with four errors during Wooster's 25-21, 28-30, 25-22, 25-18 win over the University of Pittsburgh, Bradford. Basinski's 26 digs paced Wooster's defense, and that's the most digs the senior libero's had since logging 27 against Kenyon College in the 2016 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

For the weekend, Basinski averaged 5.25 digs per set, and she ranked second on the team with six aces.

Billetdeaux and Plassard both averaged over 2.25 kills per set, while Botsch dished out 146 assists over the four matches.

Adrian's Olivia Welch, Bethany's Natalie Spitale, Franciscan University of Steubenville's Maria Ciola, Marietta College's Sam Ritenour, Oberlin College's Lexi Mitchell, Pitt.-Bradford's Laura Hidenbrand, and Westminster's Maya Steward joined Basinski on the all-tournament team.

Next, Wooster plays in a tri-match on Friday, Sept. 21 at Heidelberg University (7-5). The Scots take on the host Student Princes at 4 p.m. and Hanover College (6-5) at 8 p.m.
