The College of Wooster women's tennis team showed well in every match, and was especially strong in doubles competition, but ultimately, the Fighting Scots came up short against Malone University 5-3 in their first traditional dual-match of the season Wednesday at the D.J. Hard Tennis Courts.
The Scots (0-1) opened the season with three newcomers in the lineup, including Rachel Mole, who was competitive in a 6-4, 6-1 setback at No. 1 singles, and earned a decisive 8-2 victory with partner Catherine Christian at No. 1 doubles.
Also winning in doubles action was the team of Paula Trautvetter and Rachel Appleton, with a 9-7 triumph at the third-spot, while Rose Chiumento and freshman Catherine Boyles were edged out 8-5 at No. 2.
Christian carried over her success in doubles to notch the Scots' lone singles victory, a dominant 6-1, 6-1 result as Wooster's number two in the lineup. Chiumento, Kimberly Carter, and Boyles each lost closely-contested singles matches at the No. 3, 4, and 5 spots, respectively, while first-year Elizabeth Brewington's match at the sixth-spot was cancelled when it got too dark outside to continue play.
Wooster's next dual-match is next Wednesday at University of Mount Union at 4 p.m.
