WOOSTER, Ohio – Collegiate-bests by junior Parth Kirloskar and first-year Mirwais Arghandiwal, plus sophomore Andrew Carey's hot Monday start, headlined the numerous impressive performances by The College of Wooster men's golf team at the program's annual Nye Intercollegiate, which took place Sunday and Monday at the par-72, 6,545-yard Wooster Country Club. Wooster's lineup placed third of 12 teams with a two-day 626. The Fighting Scots opened with a 315 and finished with a 311. Two B teams, including one from Wooster, were others in the field, and the Scots' second five was very impressive, finishing second among all entries at 621.
Carey led Wooster's lineup with a fifth-place 151, and his Monday start could not have been scripted better. The sophomore drained four straight birdies in the shotgun-started round, starting on the par-4, 400-yard fourth hole. The birdie stretch included the par-4, 441-yard fifth hole, the par-4, 405-yard sixth hole, and the par-4, 534-yard seventh hole. Carey added a fifth birdie upon turning back to the front nine, with that coming on the par-5, 491-yard first hole. He played Monday's front nine at 4-under-par and had 13 holes at par or better. Carey was also under par for the front nine on Sunday, and that round included five more birdies.
Kirloskar's 1-under-par 71 on Monday marked the junior's collegiate-best by three strokes. Kirloskar placed 12th at 155. He had five brides in the round, three of which came on the back nine, resulting in a 1-under-par 35 for that nine-hole stretch. The first dropped on the 555-yard, par-5 11th hole. Two holes later, Kirloskar drained another birdie on a par-5, with this one coming on the 466-yard No. 13. He played the par-5 holes at 2-under par, aided by a third par-5 birdie on No. 1. He moved to 2-under-par with four holes remaining on Monday with a birdie on the par-4, 377-yard second hole. He opened with an 84 on Sunday.
Next was junior Mark Towns, who signed for consecutive 80s, which went down on the ledger as a tie for 27th-place. Towns drained a late birdie on the par-4, 293-yard 17th hole of round two. That resulted in the junior having an eight-hole stretch at 1-under-par starting with No. 13. Towns had two birdies in round one, with those coming on the sixth hole and the par-4, 310-yard 15th hole.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata and first-year Rafa Tanjung tied for 42nd-place with 164s. They both opened with 80s and closed with 84s. Cammarata logged three birdies for the tournament, with all of them coming on Wooster Country Club's back nine. Tanjung started the tournament with four consecutive pars and made his first birdie on No. 13 on Sunday. The two combined for 34 holes at par or better.
First-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad led the "B" team and was the 76-player field's runner-up. Khamkhokgruad shot a 4-over-par 148 after back-to-back 74s. Khamkhokgruad was very steady at the onset of the tournament, logging nine pars and a birdie over the opening 10 holes. Khamkhokgruad turned at 1-under-par on Sunday and got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 13. He played 15 holes at par or better on Sunday and 13 on Monday. Khamkhokgruad played Monday's back nine at even-par, thanks to birdies on Nos. 12 and 15. The birdie on 15 got him to 2-under-par on the back nine.
First-year Max Shulman rounded out the top-15 finishes within Wooster's second five. He went 79-78 for a 157, which was tied for 13th. Shulman played Sunday's back nine at even-par, with his birdie coming on No. 14. That was the fourth of a stretch of holes at par or better. He bounced right back from a bogey on No. 14 to post four straight pars to cap the round.
Arghandiwal's strong Sunday finish resulted in the collegiate-best 78. Arghandiwal drained a birdie on No. 13 and went on to par the last five holes.
Otterbein University won the tournament at 611. Mount Aloysius College's Josh Nicholl was the medalist with a 3-over-par 147.
Next, Wooster is off to Illinois for the North Central College Cardinal Classic, held April 21-22 at Bolingbrook Golf Club.
