BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – The College of Wooster men's golf team's final-round 304 at the North Central College Cardinal Classic marked the Fighting Scots' low round this spring and helped the program tie for fourth-place of the seven lineup sides in the field. Wooster shot a 614 for the 36-hole tournament held at the par-72, 6,722-yard Bolingbrook Golf Club.
Sophomore Andrew Carey led Wooster, tying for 11th in the 66-competitor field. Carey shot a 6-over-par 150 for the tournament, led by a 2-over-par 74 on Monday. Carey played Monday's back nine at even-par, dropping in birdies on the par-4, 385-yard 14th hole and the par-4, 391-yard 17th hole. In fact, he played a 10-hole stretch at 2-under-par, starting with No. 12 in the shotgun round. Carey played 11 holes at par or better on Tuesday, including six on the back nine, where he went 1-over-par with birdies on the par-4, 379-yard 11th hole and another on No. 14.
First-year Max Shulman's 151 was tied for 13th in the field. He closed with a 2-over-par 74. Shulman was even-par through 16 holes on Tuesday, thanks to back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 412-yard ninth hole and the par-5, 509-yard 10th hole. Shulman dropped in four birdies on Tuesday, with the others coming on the par-4, 427-yard 16th hole and the par-4, 143-yard fourth hole. Shulman's round one featured 12 holes at par or better.
First-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad tied for 21st-place at 155. Khamkhokgruad bounced back from an 81 with an impressive 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday. Tuesday's round for Khamkhokgruad started with seven straight pars, and he played 15 of the 18 holes at par or better. Khamkhokgruad's steadiness was rewarded with a birdie on No. 10, which got him down to 1-over-par through 15 holes. The first-year pared the next two holes played.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata went 78-80 for a 158, which was part of a four-way tie for 30th. Cammarata birdied his opening hole, which was No. 8, a par-3, 139-yard one on Monday. He was 2-under-par through four holes, then pared eight straight holes come No. 14, where Wooster's lineup went 3-under-par as a team. Round-two highlights included another birdie on No. 8 and 12 holes at par or better.
Junior Parth Kirloskar rounded out the lineup with a 171. Kirloskar went 3-over-par on Tuesday's back nine, fueled by birdies on the par-3, 145-yard 15th hole and the par-4, 430-yard 18th hole. Round one saw Kirloskar birdie the par-5, 516-yard third hole, No. 14, and No. 18.
Senior Sam Norris competed as an individual and was part of the tie for 52nd at 165. Norris closed with an 81 and played 12 holes at par or better.
Sixth-ranked Aurora University won the event with a 592, a stroke better than North Central. North Central's Mitchell Mazzei dominated the field, posting a five-stroke win with a 5-under-par 139.
Next, Wooster competes in John Carroll University's John DiCillo and Dan Caschera Classic, held April 27-28 at Sand Ridge Golf Club.
