CHARDON, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team followed up its season-low 304 with a 305 in the opening round of the John Carroll University Dan Caschera and John DiCillo Classic before capping the final North Coast Athletic Conference Championship tune-up with a 320. Wooster's 625 placed the Fighting Scots eighth in the 13-team field at the par-72, 6,895-yard Sand Ridge Golf Club.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata scored a 15th-place finish at 150. He opened with a 1-over-par 73, thanks to a 3-under-par finish over the last five holes. Back-to-back birdies dropped for Cammarata at the par-5, 540-yard 14th hole and the par-4, 311-yard 15th hole. Cammarata added a fifth birdie to Sunday's card on the par-3, 186-yard 17th hole. He had two birdies on Monday en route to a 77 and played the back nine at 2-over-par.
First-year Max Shulman was next, as part of the tie for 19th-place at 152. He had a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round. Shulman was as steady as they come on Sunday, playing 16 holes at par or better. He was 1-under-par through 11 holes. Three pars went on Shulman's scorecard before a bogey on No. 4. He bounced right back with a six-hole bogey-free stretch, which included birdies on the par-5, 527-yard sixth hole and the par-4, 406-yard ninth hole. The birdie on nine dropped Shulman's score for the day to 1-under par. He had six straight pars to cap the round. Shulman strung together an eight-hole stretch of par or better on Monday, headlined by a birdie on the par-4, 441-yard 11th hole.
Senior Krish Nayak was Wooster's No. 3 finisher at 157. The senior opened with a 75 and closed with an 82. Nayak had four birdies in round one, two of which helped him turn at even par. His first birdie came at No. 6, then he had a two on the par-3, 142-yard eighth hole. Nayak went 1-under-par for the Sunday round on par-5 holes. His Monday round featured 11 pars, including all par-5 holes, making him 1-under-par on par-5s for the tournament.
First-year Rafa Tanjung tied for 63rd following back-to-back 83s. Tanjung had three birdies on Monday's front nine and four for the tournament. He played 20 holes at par or better. Junior Mark Towns shot 84-84 for a 168, which was tied for 67th-place. Towns turned in a steady front nine on Monday with six pars, and the junior went even par over the last five holes of Sunday's round.
Kenyon College shot an even par 288 on Monday to post a seven-stroke win over John Carroll. The Owls finished at 584, led by medalist Jonathan Oakes' 2-under-par 142.
Wooster opens the NCAC Championship on Friday. This year's conference event is taking place at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Indiana.
