Wooster Storms Back, Caps Year with a 295

COLUMBUS, Ind. – The College of Wooster men's golf team charged back with a 295 to overtake Ohio Wesleyan University and finish 17 strokes ahead of the Battling Bishops in the battle for sixth-place on the final day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship, held at the par-72, 6,897-yard Otter Creek Golf Course.

Sophomore Andrew Carey's career-best 3-under-par 69 was at the forefront of Wooster's Sunday surge. Carey dropped back to even par with a birdie on the par-4, 405-yard fourth hole and was at 1-under-par after a three on the par-4, 370-yard sixth hole. The even holes continued to be Carey's birdie makers, with a third circle coming on No. 8, the 175-yard par-3. He played the final 16 holes at par or better, with birdie four going down on the par-5, 549-yard 18th hole. Carey's 69 is tied for the 10th-lowest round in program history where recorded scores are known. His 69 dropped the season average to 75.2, ranking second in program history for the tournament era, which includes seasons since 1972. Carey's 75.2 trails just the 75.1 alumnus Marcus Carano had during the 2015-16 season. For the tournament, Carey finished 15th at 223.

First-year Max Shulman's 12th-place 222 was Wooster's best showing at the conference championship. Shulman played Sunday's round at 1-over-par and was 1-under par over the last 13 holes. Shulman's back nine came in at 1-under-par, with his birdies coming on the par-4, 375-yard 12th hole, the par-5, 512-yard 14th hole, and No. 18. Shulman was 1-under-par through four holes, joining Carey with a birdie on No. 4. He played holes six through nine at even par.

First-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad's 76 was Wooster's No. 3 score in its 295. Khamkhokgruad tied for 26th at 234. He was one of two Scots to eagle the 14th hole, which gave the team three eagles for the championship. Khamkhokgruad turned at 2-over-par, logging seven pars on the front nine. He was 2-under-par on the day on par-5 holes, thanks to the eagle, which followed a birdie on the par-3, 171-yard 12th hole.

Sophomore Jake Cammarata rounded out Wooster's Sunday scorers with a 77. He placed 36th at 243. Cammarata came in with a 1-under-par 35 on Otter Creek's back nine, logging a birdie on No. 12 and a par on the other eight holes. His first birdie of the day came on the par-4, 404-yard seven hole, and he played the last 13 holes at 1-over-par.

Senior Krish Nayak matched Khamkhokgraud with a birdie-eagle sequence on holes 13 and 14 before capping his career with a birdie on No. 18. Nayak's 82 included a 2-over-par back nine. For the tournament, Nayak placed 35th at 240. Of note, Nayak graduates with a 77.67 average over 71 rounds, which is the seventh-best career scoring average in program history.

Wittenberg University held off Kenyon College for the NCAC title. The Tigers shot 6-under-par for the tournament, with their 858 besting the Owls by four strokes. Kenyon's Jaiden Koonar and Wabash College's Sean Bledsoe both finished at 6-under-par. Koonar won the playoff over Bledsoe for the Coach Bob Nye Medalist Award.
