Senior Mariam Zayour (North Royalton) of The College of Wooster women's swimming and diving team was recently recognized by the publication Diverse: Issues In Higher Education as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

Those named a 2025 Artur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar have maintained at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, are at least sophomores academically and have been active on campus or in their communities.

Of nearly 700 scholar-athletes nominated, one male and one female athlete was selected as Sports Scholar of the Year. In addition to this year's eight finalists, winners from each sport category nominated were recognized.

Zayour led the field in women's swimming and diving, making her one of 33 student-athletes across NCAA divisions to lead their respective sport.

In a list littered with Division I winners, Zayour and Wabash College's Mawuli Nevis (wrestling) are the only two Division III representatives.

Highlights from Zayour's senior season included winning the 400 IM consolation final at NCAC Championships, touching the wall 4:45.41 and placing 12th in 200 back consolation finals in 2:16.73.

In addition, Zayour's community service activities include helping restore Wooster parks, volunteering as a Wooster Health coach and volunteering with Techbridge girls from ages 8 to 14 and encouraging them to pursue STEM.

Zayour has also earned numerous scholarships and awards including the Dean's Scholarship, Whitmore Williams Science Scholarship award, NCAC scholar athlete award, Rindsfoos scholarship, HM Heitmann scholarship and the Huffer Life sciences endowed scholarship.

Other Wooster student-athletes nominated and named Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athletes include Claire Davis (Women's Track & Field) Ellie Fox (Women's Track & Field), Max Gurogui (Football) and Namit Misra (Men's Tennis).
