Wooster 172 qualifiers for NCAC Dr. Gordon Collins Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll

General

172 Scots Named NCAC Scholar-Athletes

Award renamed to honor Wooster's own Dr. Gordon Collins

The College of Wooster had 172 student-athletes selected to the North Coast Athletic Conference Dr. Gordon Collins Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, formerly known as the NCAC Academic Honor Roll.

To be honored, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore on an active roster in a sport sponsored by the NCAC and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Nearly 1,300 (1,286) Scots have been recognized in the 11 years of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll program.

Of Wooster's 172 student-athletes who compile the list, 57 are seniors, 64 are juniors and 51 are sophomores. Women's swimming and diving led all teams with 20 honorees. The men's and women's track and field teams each had 19, while women's soccer produced 17 for the second consecutive year. Men's cross country (15), women's cross country (13), men's soccer (13), men's swimming and diving (13), men's lacrosse (10) and women's lacrosse (10) rounded out the teams with double-digit honorees.

Wooster continued its run of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients earliler this spring when Max Wiley of men's soccer and Ollie Bream of women's swimming and diving were awarded the prestigious $10,000 award. Impressively, Wooster ranks third across the entire NCAA - Div. I, Div. II, and Div. III - for most receipients in the last five academic years.

The name of the award now honors Dr. Gordon Collins, who played a major role in the establishment of the North Coast Athletic Conference as a Wooster faculty athletic representative in the early 1980s. An emeritus Whitmore-Williams Professor of Psychology and a volunteer track and field coach at The College of Wooster from 1963-2000, Collins collaborated with presidents, athletic directors, and faculty athletic representatives to develop a vision for the new athletic association that would place a newfound emphasis on academic excellence while providing equity for women's sports and a championship format for each of the conference-sponsored sports.

Collins was a major proponent of these founding principles as well as an enthusiastic supporter for Div. III student-athletes. The NCAC Dr. Gordon Collins Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll honors Collins for his commitment to the NCAC's core philosophy, his enthusiasm for the Div. III model, and his many years of leadership throughout the conference.

Family and friends of Dr. Collins endowed the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in his honor in 2025.
