Throughout the spring semester we are celebrating our senior student-athletes with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is cross country and track and field's Jake George. George is a global media and digital studies major.
Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose to attend Wooster because I knew it would allow me to continue running at a competitive level. I was also unsure of what direction I wanted to take academically, so its liberal arts stance was a good fit for me.
Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: It means being a part of a community where everyone is striving to become better versions of ourselves. Some of the greatest people to ever enter my life came from being a Fighting Scot and I will be forever grateful for that.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: All the exciting and mundane moments spent with friends and teammates have been my favorites. Some favorite memories include moments from spring trips, team hangouts, and personal bests in the 400-meter hurdles.
Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part about being a student-athlete at Wooster, without a doubt, is the people and relationships I will continue to nurture after I graduate.
Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I work in Wooster's marketing and communications department as a graphic design intern and have participated in intramural sports.
Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Coach Dennis Rice has had the greatest impact on me. Before coming to Wooster, I was unsure of whether or not I should run cross country. About four years ago, I asked him if I should run cross country with my phone shaking. He replied with an enthusiastic yes. This was the best piece of advice I have ever taken as it opened the door to many fun times with fun people.
Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: All my professors have shown advanced understanding of their material and have helped me gain a deeper understanding of my strengths and interests.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My senior I.S is part academic and part creative. The academic portion looks at marketing and branding practices minor league teams should utilize to find success and increase fan engagement. The creative aspect involves the creation of a mock minor league baseball team.
Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: One of my favorite experiences is the track and field team's trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina over spring break. It is a fun experience with friends and it gives our team a chance to run and learn from other competitors.
Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Listen to your body more, spend as much time with people as possible, and do not put so much pressure on results; just have fun.
