Hayden Schilling

A mainstay on The College of Wooster coaching staff for morethan three decades now, Hayden Schilling has built one of the mostsuccessful men’s tennis programs in the NCAA Division IIICentral Region. He has also served as the women’s coach attimes, the 2004, 2011, and 2012 seasons.

In his 33 years at the helm of the men’s team, Schilling,also a professor of history at the College, has guided Wooster to23 winning seasons and an overall record of 446-300 (.598). Amongthe highlights since 1980 are four North Coast Athletic Conferencechampionships (1985, 1989, 1990, 1996) and three appearances in theNCAA Div. III Tournament during a four-year stretch in themid-1990s (1994, 1996, 1997).

Individually, five Scot players have earned All-American honors(Warren Cham-A-Koon, Steve Kuri, John Morlidge, Bob Savitt, JamesWeaver) while a number of others have competed in the NCAAsingles’ and doubles’ national tourneys.

Schilling is a five-time NCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of theYear (1985, 1990, 1991, 1996, 2004).

Active in the tennis community, Schilling has chaired the NCAADivision III Men’s Tennis Subcommittee, been a member of theITA Regional Men’s Tennis Ranking Committee, and is a memberof the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the IntercollegiateTennis Association (ITA), and the United States Professional TennisAssociation (USPTA). In addition, he founded Wooster’s TennisCamp, which brought together some of the top college coaches andjuniors in the Midwest.

A 1959 graduate of Southern Methodist University, where heplayed intercollegiate tennis, Schilling earned his master’sdegree and Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University.
