WOOSTER, Ohio – Kenyon College jumped out to first-inning leads over The College of Wooster in both games and then hung to win them by matching 5-2 counts in North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at Galpin Park.
In the opener, the Ladies (28-8, 9-5 NCAC) used a two-run homer to take a 2-0 advantage over the Scots (14-14, 5-5 NCAC) in the top of the first frame.
Pitcher Maddy Chase shook off the long ball and retired 12 of the next 13 batters she faced, as the score remained 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. That was when Wooster's offense started to make some noise.
The Scots loaded the bases, with Taylor Raybuck and Paige Goldberg smacking singles, and Linea Brouse drawing a walk, and then Carly Schoenstein drove in a pair with a single to center field which tied the game at two apiece.
Over the next two innings, Kenyon scored three more runs, while the Scots were limited to just one hit – an infield single off the bat of Skye Patterson – resulting in a 5-2 setback.
The second game played out similarly, with the Ladies taking a 3-0 lead at the onset, but this time Wooster wasn't able to knot the score at any point. The Scots got close, though, with Jenna Kendall delivering an RBI single in the second inning, and then in the fourth, Stephenie Little smashed an RBI double to left center which made it a 4-2 ballgame.
From that point on, Kenyon once again stifled Wooster's bats down the stretch, allowing just a harmless single to Brouse in the fifth, en route to yet another 5-2 victory.
Georgia Hill and Patterson were the two Scots that notched hits in both games of the doubleheader.
Prior to the game, Wooster honored its five seniors – Goldberg, Demi Hart, Patterson, Schoenstein, and Julia Williams – whom were playing in the final home games of their careers.
Goldberg is the program's all-time leader in hits (155), runs scored (98), and stolen bases (32). Hart and Schoenstein are right behind Goldberg with 145 and 128 hits, respectively. Patterson's 58 runs scored rank seventh all-time. Williams, who transferred to Wooster from rival Wittenberg University as a junior, has 17 runs and three stolen bases as the team's top pinch runner.
The Scots are right in the thick of the race for an NCAC Tournament bid and will take on Oberlin College (2-21-1, 1-9 NCAC) twice Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
