Game Recap: Softball |

Chase Fires One-Hitter as Scots Head North Riding Four-Game Win Streak

The College of Wooster softball team ended its annual spring trip with a four-game win streak, highlighted by a one-hitter turned in by sophomore Maddy Chase on Thursday at Fort Myers, Fla.

The Fighting Scots (9-7) opened the final day of their trip with a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.)

Chase was lights out in the circle in the contest. After allowing a one-out single in the bottom of the first, the right-hander set down the final 20 batters of the game on 15 ground outs, four fly outs, and a strike out.

The sophomore helped her caused at the plate driving Marissa Gorvet in via a single down the left field line in the top of the fourth that made it a 2-0 contest.

Earlier in the frame, Gorvet plated Jenna Kendall on a two-out single to left field.

The Scots' added their third run via a Mount St. Mary error in the fifth inning.

Later in the day on Thursday, Wooster topped the College of Mount Saint Vincent 8-6.

Wooster built a 6-0 lead through two innings of play. Highlights from the early offensive explosion included a two-run single from Kendal, and RBI singles off the bats of Linea Brouse, Chelsea Copley, and Chase.

Gorvet knocked in the final two runs of the game for the Scots, first on a two-out single in the fifth, and then via a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Chase picked up her team-leading sixth win of the season, firing 4.1 innings of relief in support of Kendall.

On Tuesday, Wooster snapped a four-game skid with a 6-3 win over Manchester University.

The Scots really got going in the third inning, pushing five runs across the plate. Kendall supported herself in the circle with a two-run double down the left field line to plate the game's first two runs. Kasey Fiedler followed suit with a two-run double of her own, while Lauren Abbott capped the inning with an infield single that plated Fielder.

Bridget Serrurier, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Softball Player-of-the-Week clubbed her team-leading third homer of the season in the top of the sixth inning that at the time, made it a 6-0 contest.

Kendall picked up her third win of the season in the circle, allowing eight hits for the game. All three of Manchester's runs were unearned.

Wooster's momentum carried over as the Scots hung on for a 6-4 win over Mount St. Vincent in the second game of the Tuesday twin bill.

The Scots again struck for a five-run inning, this time in the fourth frame. Serrurier delivered the biggest hit of the frame – a RBI double to left-center – that plated Jamie Kenyon, who herself drove in a run via a bases-loaded hit by pitch two batters earlier. Wooster also had an RBI single from Kendall and a sacrifice fly from Chase in the inning.

Chase picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle allowing seven hits in the complete-game effort.

Other highlights from the second half of the spring trip included a 3-for-4 day with three RBIs from Serrurier in a 7-6 eight-inning loss to the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday, a two-hit outing from Stephenie Little in a 2-0 setback to Manchester on Saturday, a RBI double from Chase that was part of a three-run first inning in a 10-3 loss against Manchester on Monday, and a five-hit complete game from Chase during a 3-2 loss to Saint Olaf College on Monday.

Kendall led the Scots at the plate over the second half of the trip. The junior sported a .357 (10-for-28) average with a team-best six RBI, and brings a seven-game hitting streak back north. Brouse also really heated up at the plate over the last eight games, turning in a .350 (7-for-20) clip.

Chase turned in a 3-2 mark with a 2.12 ERA, while Kendall went 1-2 with a 2.43 ERA over the last eight games. Of note, Chase held opposing hitters to a .212 average in her five outings in the circle.

Wooster opens the northern portion of its schedule with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Mount Union (12-8) on Thursday, March 31.
