No. 6 Wooster Tripped Up By Muskingum 4-2 Despite Stellar Pitching, Defense

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster baseball team, up to two spots to sixth in this week's D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association top 25 poll, spun three double plays defensively, but could not string together enough offense in a 4-2 loss to Muskingum University at Art Murray Field on Wednesday.

Muskingum (8-9) struck for the game's first run in the top of the first on Austin DeVore's two-out double to left that plated Joe Shumar, who poked a single through the right side of the field.

Wooster (10-2) rallied back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Chandler Dippman beat out a throw on a fielder's choice that brought in both of the Fighting Scots' runs on the day. Junior Drew Tornow started the rally with a one-out base knock and moved up to third on sophomore Jacob Stuursma's double. Then, senior Jake Kail drew a walk to load the basses prior to Dippman's fielder's choice.

Muskingum tied the game at two in the fifth, but junior James Usher did a fine job working out of a no-out bases-loaded jam. The right-hander induced a double play against the first batter he faced, with the tying run coming in on the play, before Tornow made a key snag in the outfield to get the Scots out of the inning.

In the next inning, Usher benefitted from a second double play, as the Scots went around the horn on an inning-ending 5-4-3 twin killer.

In the eighth inning, Wooster had the infield in, and senior Jamie Lackner snared a hard grounder for the second out of the inning, and caught Dallas Allen leaning off of second base for the inning-ending double play. However, Allen did deliver the winning run in a two-run double prior to being caught leaning by Lackner.

Wooster did out hit Muskingum 9-5 as seven Scots pitchers combined on the five-hitter, with Wooster's showings coming from two scoreless innings by Usher and a 1-2-3 ninth inning by sophomore Brian Murray.

Next, Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play against Oberlin College (9-6) with first pitch for Saturday's twin bill slated for noon.
