WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania – Sophomore Audrey McKenna became the latest College of Wooster field hockey player to score for the first time in college in Saturdays' 2-1 loss at Washington & Jefferson College.
Wooster (3-6, 1-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) struck first in the fourth minute. A Wooster penalty corner insert was worked to junior Lizzie Hardy up top, and the midfielder's shot was saved by Washington & Jefferson's (2-7, 2-3 NCAC) Grace Erhard. The rebound was worked towards the right corner of the cage, where it was kept in play by junior Coco Rodríguez. Rodríguez's pass went to Hardy who sent to ball in the vicinity of the left post. There, McKenna was left unguarded for the easy tap-in goal.
Wooster's lead was short lived, as Sara Schriver netted the equalizer in the 14th minute. A penalty corner insert led to a Camryn Cresci shot that was saved by Wooster junior Cate Barkdoll. The rebound went right back to Cresci, who fed the ball to Schriver for the score at the right post.
Less than a minute later, the Presidents scored again. A Jessica Nakanishi pass to center deflected off Bailey Miller's stick into the air and snuck in just under the crossbar.
Wooster had the offensive opportunities in the middle stanzas, outshooting Washington & Jeferson 4-1 over periods two and three. Sophomore Naledi Jani's attempt at tying the game was turned aside by Erhard just over 2:30 in to the second period. Erhard made save four of the game on Hardy's shot with 7:12 left in the third period.
Washington & Jefferson threatened late, with three penalty corners in the final 3:16, but did not get a shot off on any of them.
Barkdoll and Erhard have five saves each. Washington & Jefferson held a slight 11-9 lead in shots and the Presidents earned 20 corners on the day.
Wooster is off until a 7 p.m. home game on Wednesday, October 16 against Allegheny College (2-9, 2-2 NCAC).
