The College of Wooster football team outgained Denison University, but could not overcome turnovers and a non-successful trick play in Saturday's 28-7 loss to the Big Red at John P. Papp Stadium.
Junior
Michael Boyle sold the play fake on a keeper in the final minute of the first half and beat a Big Red defender to the corner of the end zone from two yards out to put the Fighting Scots on the board. First-year
Nolan Hendricks' extra point had Wooster within 14-7 with 14 seconds to go before halftime.
Prior to Boyle's keeper, Wooster was faced with fourth-and-2 from Denison's 39-yard line. Boyle went to the always reliable
Tate Journell for the 12-yard pickup. Later, senior
Jordan Lewis had a chain-moving 5-yard reception on third down, and the Scots were set up at Denison's 2-yard line following a pass interference call in the end zone.
Denison made it 21-7 after the first of three third-quarter Wooster turnovers.
Tyler Green found an open
Logan Yater for a 22-yard passing touchdown with 7:23 on the third-quarter clock. The Big Red upped the lead to 28-7 with 3:22 remaining in the game. The final score was a 16-yard Green-to-
Jack Williams touchdown and came after Wooster tried a Hendricks keeper on a punt formation that was unsuccessful in picking up the needed yardage to keep the pigskin.
Denison's lead was 7-0 on a double pass with 8:58 left in the second quarter. Williams completed a 19-yard touchdown to Yater. Later,
Blayton Reid scored on a 9-yard rush that helped up the lead to 14-0 with just over two minutes before halftime.
Journell and sophomore
Chance Bennett had big nights receiving. Journell turned eight receptions into 112 yards, while Bennett went for 93 stripes on seven receptions. Boyle completed 26-of-44 passes for 250 yards, but was intercepted three times. Boyle's 53 yards, the majority of which came on scrambles, led Wooster's rushers.
Senior
Brock Sivon logged 10 tackles and had a partial block on a Denison punt in the first quarter. He was followed by senior
Brandon Torres' eight tackles.
Green completed 10-of-19 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Reid carried the ball 20 times, but was held to just 63 yards with a long of nine.
Grayson Kerscher turned four receptions into 108 yards, with 50 coming after the catch.
Colton Morrow was the Big Red's leading defender with eight tackles and an interception.
Rory Ralston saw two of his six tackles go for a loss, and he had a forced fumble.
Wooster outgained Denison 355-3221. The Scots were 5-of-15 on third down, while the Big Red were held to a 4-of-12 mark.
Denison improved to 3-2, 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference with the win, and won its 11th straight in the rivalry to retain possession of the Old Red Lantern. Wooster fell to 3-3, 3-2 NCAC.
Next, Wooster is at Ohio Wesleyan University (1-4, 0-3 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
