Scots Bounce Back For First NCAC Win

Volleyball defeats Oberlin, 3-1

The College of Wooster volleyball team got back in the win column Friday night, defeating Oberlin College 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 27-25) for its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Senior Izzy Cozzie put up season-high marks with 18 points, 17 kills and four assists. The 18 points and 17 kills were also match-highs.

Junior Jordan Laraway also had quite the night with season-highs in kills (9), points (13) and aces (4). First-years Erin Ellis and Kennedy Muhlenkamp led the way with 18 and 15 assists, respectively, while sophomore Catherine Muzilla produced a team-high 16 digs.

Oberlin had three reach double figures in kills, and Jillian Jendsen totaled a match-high 27 assists.

The Yeowomen were well on their way to forcing a fifth set after a five-point run broke up a 14-14 tie. However, the Scots stayed resilient, chipping away at Oberlin's lead and fighting off set point three times to tie the set at 24.

On service, Laraway was forefront in Wooster's late four point swing, which included an ace to give Wooster a 25-24 edge. While Oberlin tied it at 25, back-to-back kills from Cozzie and Tamarra Talbert decided the match.

Both teams played even throughout the night.

In the first set, Oberlin led 21-20 before Wooster rallied off the final five points of the set. Set two was tied at 22 before Oberlin pulled through for the set win.

In set three, Wooster had five kills in a six-point run to take a 17-12 lead. Yet, Oberlin fought back to tie it at 23 before Wooster scored two straight, which included a kill from Mary-Catherine Werth.

The match saw 26 ties and 14 lead changes. Wooster (4-11, 1-1 NCAC) gave Oberlin its eighth straight loss as they drop to 2-14 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC.

Next, Wooster heads to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on Colorado College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
