Another Overtime Heartbreaker for Wooster

Scots drop third contest of year in extra time

The College of Wooster field hockey team dropped its final game of the year in heartbreaking fashion, as Allegheny College's Bryce Watford sent the Gators home a 2-1 winner in the third minute of the second overtime period on Saturday at the Blue Turf in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Wooster was unable to end its season with back-to-back double overtime wins. The Fighting Scots' good chances in extra time came early in the first overtime, where Wooster had three straight penalty corner inserts. Allegheny dominated from there, with Caroline Smith getting four shots on goal off in the final 6:50 of the first extra session. Senior Cate Barkdoll's saves count more than doubled during that stretch.

In the second overtime, a penalty corner insert was worked to Jamie Marchewka, whose shot was stopped by Barkdoll for the senior's eighth save of the afternoon. Watford tracked down the rebound and fired in the game-winner from about four yards out.

Wooster scored first in the third quarter. Junior Melinda Lazenby took the ball away from an Allegheny player just outside the circle in the Scots' defensive end. On the sideline, junior Allie Toombs played the ball ahead to junior Lizzie Hardy. Sophomore Frankie Zehnal worked to get open, and that set up Hardy for a lead pass that Zehnal was then able to deflect into the goal. The goal was Zehnal's fourth of the year. She finished behind Hardy for the team lead, as the Scots' senior midfielder netted five.

Caroline Smith delivered the equalizer for Allegheny less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Maddy Keenan directed a loose ball inside the circle towards Smith for the assist.

Allegheny outshot Wooster 19-9. Rowan O'Toole had five saves for the Gators, three fewer than Barkdoll's eight.

Allegheny concluded its season at 5-9, 3-6 North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster also wrapped up play, with the Scots record going to 3-10, 3-6 NCAC.
