Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nationally Ranked Yellow Jackets Top Scots in Classic Finale

Riccitelli led all scorers with 20 points

Ninth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University was the lone team to leave the Nan Nichols Classic with a 2-0 record after the Yellow Jackets defeated The College of Wooster women's basketball team, 84-56, on Saturday.

Brooke Thompson was named the MVP on the All-Tournament Team, finishing Saturday with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Leah Riley joined her with a 15-point performance off the bench.

For Wooster, sophomore Mackenzie Riccitelli led all scorers with 20 points and led Wooster with seven rebounds. Junior Ace Sturdivant followed with 15 points, five assists and five rebounds as the duo was both selected to the All-Tournament Team as well for their efforts.

Junior Abby Henegar scored eight points and three rebounds off the bench. First-year Pink Sturdivant added six points. Senior Ella Biondi had just two points but added five rebounds and four blocks.

The Scots used their home court advantage to pull out to an early 6-0 lead. Riccitelli scored on the front and back end of that span, while assisting on Ace Sturdivant's first points of the game.

However, that wound up being Wooster's best run and largest lead of the game. Baldwin Wallace managed to tie the game at 10 at the first media time out, which started their best run of the game of 14 points. Pink Sturdivant scored the quarter's last bucket for Baldwin Wallace to lead 21-12 after one.

Wooster played its best full quarter of basketball in the second period, as Baldwin Wallace took the quarter by just one point at 20-19 to lead 41-31 at halftime.

The Scots had a 6-0 run in the second capped by a putback by first-year Hannah Stroebe that made it a 23-20 game. Yet, Baldwin Wallace was quick to answer with their own 8-0 run.

Wooster (3-1) had to fight through foul trouble with two early calls on Stroebe and later Riccitelli, who picked up her fourth foul midway through the third. Wooster was down 12 when Riccitelli collected her fourth and found trouble scoring with her on the bench, trailing 63-41 after three quarters.

Wooster played better in the fourth but the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets (2-1) had built up too big of a lead.

Wooster shot 39 percent (24-62) from the floor to Baldwin Wallace's 43 percent (31-72). Wooster struggled to find its shot from range, going just 2-of-14 (14 percent) for the game, while Baldwin Wallace shot 35 percent (9-26).

Neither team missed a free throw. Baldwin Wallace made all 13 of their attempts, and Wooster made all six of theirs.

Baldwin Wallace's size also got the better of the Scots, outrebounding them 46-29. Wooster only committed 15 turnovers to Baldwin Wallace's 11, but the Yellow Jackets turned those turnovers into 21 points.

The Yellow Jackets also got a huge bench contribution, outscoring Wooster's 42-13.

Wooster now heads on the road for seven straight games and won't play again in Timken Gymnasium until the new year. Next, the Scots travel to Heidelberg University on Wednesday.
In the opener on Saturday, Grove City College defeated Mount Aloysius College, 82-64.
