Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scots Keep Knights at Bay, 83-59

Wooster wins home opener

The College of Wooster men's basketball team shot nearly 60 percent in its home opener to coast to an 83-59 win over State University of New York College at Geneseo on Friday evening in what marked night one of the program's annual Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic.

Wooster (1-2) raced out to an 11-3 lead in the opening 3:09. Junior transfer Quincy Jones was a focal point of the Fighting Scots' offense, scoring the team's first six points. Senior Isaac Roeder followed with a 3-pointer from the wing, then senior Isaiah Johnson motored down the court for a transition layup to cap the opening stretch.

Roeder's second triple of the game made it 27-15 with 8:26 left in the first half, and Wooster's lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way. Wooster's lead was 16 at 33-17 when sophomore Breckman Oakley's step-back 3-pointer swished home at 6:31, and the lead was back to 16 at 44-28 come halftime, thanks to Roeder's third triple of the half.

Wooster broke things wide open late, scoring the final 10 points of the contest. Jones' floating jumper made it 75-59, then his turnaround jumper dropped, making it 77-59 with 2:32 to go. Senior Jaiden Cox-Holloway, who passed out his fifth assist of the night on Jones' final bucket, quickly deflected the ball away for a steal on Geneseo's (2-3) next possession. Next, Roeder was dishing out his fifth assist of the night, as Johnson hit a 3-pointer to make it 80-59. First-year Tommy Vaughn Jr. capped the scoring with Wooster's 10th 3-pointer of the night.

Defensively, Wooster held Geneseo to 39 percent shooting for the game at 23-of-59. Roeder had three of Wooster's nine steals, while Oakley took high honors on the night with two of the team's five blocked shots.

Jones exited with 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Cox-Holloway followed with 15 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double. Sophomore Si Kielian dropped in 11 points off Wooster's bench.

Jaiyden Jones led Geneseo with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Wooster outrebounded Geneseo 34-32 and outscored the Knights by 21 from beyond the arc.

Otterbein University (4-0) beat State University of New York at Brockport (1-2) 87-73 in Friday's first game. Julian Heckman went 7-of-9 from the floor for 19 points to lead a trio of Cardinals in double figures in the scoring column. Brockport was led by 16 points from Jacob Oka, who was 6-of-7 from the floor and made both of his 3-point tries.

Otterbein shot 57.4 percent (31-of-54) for the game, while Brockport finished at 44.1 percent (26-of-59).

As Brockport and Geneseo are in the same conference, Saturday's matchups were determined prior to the classic. Otterbein and Geneseo meet in Saturday's 4 p.m. game, with Wooster and Brockport to follow at 6 p.m. Fans can get in free with the donation of two canned or boxed food items for People to People Ministries food bank.
