GRANVILLE -- A series of misfortunes took The College of Wooster men's soccer team out of the driver's seat and on the wrong end of a comeback by No. 25 Denison University in a 2-1 overtime loss in the North Coast Athletic Conference semifinal.
The third-seeded Scots played with the lead for almost the entire game after shocking the second-seeded Big Red with a score in the fourth minute, the team's second fastest goal of the year, just 3:23 into the game. JuniorÂ
Robert Hillhouse scored at a tough angle near the right post with classmateÂ
Griffin Thornton on the assist.
Ironically, the team's fastest goal of the season came against LaRoche University when Thornton scored off the assist from Hillhouse 3:08 into the game.
Back to Wednesday, Wooster stayed in control heading into halftime, having outshot the Big Red 5-4. The Scots were fighting back against a relentless attack in the second half, but a red card issued in the 75th minute turned Wooster's game upside down.
Junior
Nate Chartrand put on a slide tackle from about 30 yards out, disrupting a clear path opportunity. After review he was issued the red card, putting Wooster a man down for the remainder of the game.
Denison responded with attack after attack. Wooster had to play on its heels the rest of the way, failing to find another offensive opportunity.
Wooster made some big stops. Sophomore keeper
Eddie Glucksman stopped an attempt with about 4:18 remaining. A yellow card gave Denison a free kick from about 15 yards out but the shot went high.
Then, heartbreak in the 87th minute as a corner kick foundÂ
Colin MacDonald on the header, scoring the equalizer.
The Scots got to breathe a little, doing enough to force the overtime. Yet, still playing a man down, they had to go back to surviving the Denison attack.
The overtime saw three consecutive corner kicks from the Big Red. Finally, a throw in that was simulated like a corner kick, caused enough of a mess in front of the goal for a shot byÂ
Phil Kotsaftis to sneak through for the game winner in the 96th minute.
Denison outshot Wooster 13-3 in the second half and 3-0 in overtime to hold the 20-8 advantage in the game. Denison also took a total of eight corner kicks to Wooster's five.
Denison (14-1-3) advances to the championship game and earns a trip to No. 1 seed DePauw University, who defeated No. 4 seed Kenyon College, 3-2, on Wednesday.
For Wooster, their stellar season ends with a record of 11-2-6, reaching the NCAC Tournament for the first time in 21 years and double digits in wins since 2006.
