Scots Pick Off No. 15 Tigers Three Times in Second Half

DePauw tops Wooster in season finale

Three second-half interceptions, including two by first-year Grady Harban, were The College of Wooster football team's bright spot in Saturday's season-concluding 59-0 loss at No. 15 DePauw University.

Sophomore defensive back Charlie Scoggin logged his team-high third interception of the season with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter. DePauw's first drive of the fourth quarter ended with Harban's second interception of the season. The first-year's pick set Wooster up at DePauw's 34-yard line, but the Fighting Scots were unable to pick up a first down following the takeaway.

Later, Harban again picked off Jack Kazmierczak, this time near midfield, for his third interception of the year. Harban and Scoggin are the first Wooster teammates to have at least three interceptions in a season since Tate Journell and Paul Thomas Fischer combined for seven interceptions in 2023. It marks just the third time since 2014 where multiple Wooster players logged three interceptions in a season.

DePauw quickly took the lead and never looked back. Caden Whitehead toted the ball two times for 61 yards on the Tigers' opening drive, which ended with a 34-yard touchdown run. The Tigers came away with points on their first five drives to open a 31-0 halftime lead. DePauw tacked on 28 points in the second half.

Wooster had success early passing the ball, working out of a third-and-19 jam on its opening drive. Junior Michael Boyle completed a 17-yard pass to sophomore Cam Crago before finding first-year Brody Snyder for a chain-moving 21-yard fourth-down pickup. However, Joey Roland logged the first of the Tigers' five interceptions to stop the momentum.

In the second quarter, Wooster converted two third- and one fourth-down plays as part of a 15-play drive, but again, DePauw held, this time with the Scots turning the ball over on downs inside the red zone.

Boyle, who only played in the first half, completed 12-of-22 passes for 118 yards. Crago led Wooster's receivers with 69 yards on four catches, while Snyder added 41 yards on four receptions.

Scoggin led the defense with six tackles. Senior Brock Sivon followed with five. Senior DT Franklin had Wooster's lone sack of the afternoon.

Scott Ballentine went 10-of-17 passing for 150 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. His brother, Robby Ballentine, was the go-to target, with the Tigers' leading wideout finishing with 79 yards and a score on five catches. Whitehead had just five carries, but he went for 98 stripes.

Roland led DePauw's defense with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception.

Of note, Wooster held DePauw to 399 yards of total offense, meaning the Scots yielded under 400 yards of offense per game for the first time since 2019.

Wooster concluded the year at 5-5, 4-4 North Coast Athletic Conference. The Scots' five wins are the most since 2022.

DePauw is now 8-1, 6-1 NCAC with the Monon Bell Classic on deck against No. 25 Wabash College (8-1, 6-1) next Saturday.
