The College of Wooster men's basketball team's best shooting nights this season have come in the opener of the program's annual classics, as the Fighting Scots shot 57.1 percent from the floor in Monday's 80-63 win over Geneva College. The game opened the program's annual E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic, which is one of the oldest small college basketball regular season events.
Wooster's Monday shooting percentage trails the 57.6 percent (34-of-59) from the opening night of the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic for top billing in a game this winter. It marked the third time Wooster has made over half of its field goals in a game.
Wooster led comfortably for the majority of Monday's win and took its first double-digit lead on junior
Quincy Jones' layup at 14:11. The bucket capped the Scots' 8-0 run and had Wooster up 13-3. Sophomore
Si Kielian knocked down a 3-pointer and senior
EJ Kapihe was a contributor early in the scoring column down low.
The Scots shot 60 percent (18-of-30) in the opening half, which was led by a 5-of-8 showing down low from Jones. Wooster's balance was on full display, as four players had at least seven points in the opening stanza.
Jaiden Cox-Holloway's playmaking was everywhere, as the senior accumulated eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 16:12 of first-half court time.
Senior
Isaac Roeder's corner triple upped Wooster's lead to an all-but-game-put-away 69-47 with 8:57 remaining in the contest. Cox-Holloway swatted aside a
Micah Fisher 3-pointer on the next possession, then upped the lead to 23 at the charity stripe. The Scots' leading scorer hit a pull-up jumper from near the elbow to give Wooster its largest lead of the night at 72-47, which came with 7:12 left on the clock.
Wooster's defensive intensity was noticeably ramped up in Monday's win with several hustle scrambles for loose balls won by Scots. Senior
Carter Warstler won one of them, diving for a steal when
Alec Strock lost the ball near midcourt with 12:30 to go. Upon gaining possession, Wooster had a multi-player breakaway opportunity, with Kielian's fastbreak layup making it a 61-42 game.
Cox-Holloway led all players with 19 points and was one of three Scots in double figures in the scoring column. Jones was next at 14 points, while Kapihe was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor en route to a 10-point night. Cox-Holloway led all players with nine rebounds, Kielian passed out a team-high four assists, and Cox-Holloway had high honors in steals and blocks with three and two, respectively.
Wooster outscored Geneva 42-28 in the point and had 35 bench points to just three for the Golden Tornadoes.
Nick Million scored 18 points to lead Geneva. His team shot just 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the floor and was outrebounded by 10.
Wooster improved to 4-7 while Geneva's record evened out at 5-5.
In Monday's second game, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville defeated Hanover College 77-54. Platteville's (7-3)
Bristol Lewis went 7-of-10 from the floor, which included a 3-of-4 night from beyond the arc to finish with a team-high 17 points. Platteville shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) as a team.
Hanover (6-4) was led by
Malachi McNair's 16 points and six rebounds. McNair went 8-of-11 from the floor. However, the rest of Hanover's team was a combined 15-of-46. Overall, Hanover was just 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor for the game.
Tuesday's consolation game between Geneva and Hanover tips at 4 p.m., with the championship between Wooster and Platteville to follow at 6 p.m.
