WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's tennis team made quick work of the University of Mount Union, winning 6-1 in the program's spring lid-lifter on Saturday afternoon at Aspen Racquet Club.
Wooster's (2-0) fourth through sixth singles flights dropped just three games. Sophomore Bennett Dickerson blanked Noah Fink 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles, while sophomore Max Stratford nearly did likewise during a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Luke Deland at No. 6. In the fourth flight, first-year Ian Royse turned aside Jacob Timonere 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Anthony VanOyen bested Elliott Warner 6-2, 6-3 at first singles and sophomore Arnav Yadav backed that up with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2.
Wooster swept Mount Union in doubles action for the team point. Dickerson and VanOyen went 6-3 over Warner and Nick Sziraky in the top flight. Yadav and junior Namit Misra posted a 6-4 decision over Andrew Cavett and Timonere at No. 2. Stratford and Royse capped the doubles lineup with a 6-1 victory over Fink and Deland in the third flight.
Misra dropped a tightly-contested 6-4, 6-4 match at third singles.
Next, Wooster plays 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (1-0) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 8. The match is taking place at Oberlin College.
