NEW CONCORD – The College of Wooster softball team collected their first sweep of a team on Wednesday, taking down Muskingum University 9-6 and 6-1 in non-conference play.
A five-run third inning propelled Wooster in game one.
Junior Julia Jennings kicked off the inning, scoring two on a single to right field. Classmate Cate Barkdoll then welcomed the new pitcher out of the pen with a two-run shot to right field as Wooster would take a 6-2 lead by the end of the inning.
Barkdoll also was one of three Scots to hit a double along with senior Sarah Lodge and first-year Jillian Meszaros.
Lodge's hit came in the fourth to make it an 8-2 game. In the same inning, sophomore Jasmine Mueller singled to center to only increase Wooster's lead.
The offense gave enough of a cushion for the starting pitcher Meszaros as Muskingum matched Wooster with a three-run fourth inning of their own.
The first-year picked up her fifth win, pitching all seven innings and striking out two.
Both teams sprayed 10 hits in the game. Jennings went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Barkdoll finished 2-for-3 with her home run, double, two RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, sophomore Tori Conner locked down the Muskingum (13-16) offense, allowing just one run across five hits in seven innings. She also struck out three.
Wooster jumped on Muskingum early with two runs in the first with Jennings and Lodge each collecting an RBI.
Muskingum put across their lone run in the second with a double to right field. From there, Conner shut down the Muskies the rest of the way.
Wooster ignited its offense with another five-run inning, this time with the spurt coming in the fourth and led by a three-run home run from Meszaros, which was her first collegiate home run.
Jennings and Lodge each ended with a pair of RBI. Barkdoll went 2-for-3, while Meszaros went 2-for-4. Meanwhile, Emma Hetkey produced three singles in three at bats and scored three times.
Lynnsey Delio and Brenna Haydu also got their bats going, each collecting a double.
Wooster moves to 11-19 and will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday when they host the second-place team of Denison University (19-10, 9-1 NCAC).
