COLUMBUS, Ind. – The College of Wooster men's golf team will look to conclude its season on a high note, as Saturday's 317 at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship bumped the Fighting Scots to seventh at 617. Wooster is still within striking distance of a top-six finish, as the Scots are just five strokes back of Ohio Wesleyan University with one round remaining at the par-72, 6,897-yard Otter Creek Golf Course.
First-year Max Shulman continues to lead Wooster. Shulman followed his opening-round 72 with a 77 and is tied for 13th at 149. Shulman was even par through 12 holes and twice battled his way back to that point. First, Shulman birdied the par-3, 171-yard 13th hole and followed that with his fifth birdie or better of the tournament on the par-5, 512-yard 14th hole. He was back to even par with a three on the par-4, 387-yard 17th hole. Shulman played the par-3 and par-5 holes at even par for round two.
Sophomore Andrew Carey's three birdies helped him to a 78, which was Wooster's No. 2 score on the day. Carey is tied for 27th at 154. He played Saturday's front nine at 2-over-par, led by birdies at the par-5, 584-yard fifth hole and the par-4, 404-yard seventh hole. Carey played 10 holes at par or better on Saturday.
Ten pars were turned in by first-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad as part of a round-two 80. Khamkhokgruad is tied for 31st with a 158. Khamkhokgruad played holes 16 through four at 1-over-par and had six of his 10 pars on the front nine.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata was next at 82 and he is 37th with a 36-hole score of 166. Cammarata had a seven-stroke bounce back on Otter Creek's back nine, and he played holes 12 through 17 at even par.
Senior Krish Nayak's 84 rounded out the lineup. Nayak is tied for 31st at 158. Nayak turned at 2-over-par, firing off five straight pars to cap the back nine, which was the men's starting stretch on Saturday.
Wittenberg University shot a 5-under-par 283 and is 9-under-par for the championship at 567. Wittenberg carries a five-stroke lead over Kenyon College into Sunday's final round. The Tigers' Mitchell Bolte turned in one of two 4-under-par 68s on Saturday and is the individual leader at 5-under-par.
Sunday's final round starts at 8 a.m., and the men begin on hole one. Wooster is part of the opening wave.
