Softball Sweeps in Season Finale

The College of Wooster softball team gave their lone senior a season-ending sweep over Oberlin College on Sunday with a 5-1 victory in game one and a 10-1 (5 innings) win in game two.

In games played at Wooster High School and with Oberlin acting as the designated home team, the teams were able to complete their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule after the rain pushed the game to Sunday.

In game one, Wooster did its damage with a four-run sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Junior Cate Barkdoll hit her team leading sixth home run to straight center field with a runner on and one out. Wooster then put together three straight singles, capped by a two-run hit from Madi Yankauskas.

Wooster collected nine hits. Junior Emma Hetkey went 3-for-4 and Barkdoll finished 2-for-4.

On the mound, first-year Jillian Meszaros faced the minimum through four innings before Oberlin (2-31, 0-14 NCAC) got one run across in the fifth.

Meszaros pitched the complete game for her ninth win of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

In game two, Wooster got on the board early and did not let up, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits.

Meszaros led off with a single and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from classmate Lynx Lander. Wooster scored again on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 first inning lead.

Junior Julia Jennings hit an RBI single in the second before Wooster opened the game with a four-run fourth inning, which all occurred with two outs.

The senior Sarah Lodge, Lander and junior Ella Wolff each collected an RBI in the inning. Lodge then turned around in the fifth inning to collect a two-run single in her final at bat, giving the senior a 2-for-4, three RBI performance to wrap up her career.

Hetkey had another solid performance, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jennings also went 2-for-3, Lander went 2-for-4 and Barkdoll went 1-for-2 with two walks.

The offense backed first-year Kaitlyn Hale on the mound, who pitched the complete game. Hale picked up her second win, allowing just two hits and one lone run, which came in the third. She also struck out three batters.

Also of note, Barkdoll threw out three runners on the day, running her total to 21 on the season, which is near the top of the ranks across all of Division III.

Hetkey collected three stolen bases on the day to give her 26 on the season and 54 in her career. She overtakes the program's career record and the 26 is second in a single season.

Wooster concludes the year at 17-21 with a 6-8 record in the NCAC. They finished the year 8-2 in the last 10 games and winners of four straight in conference play.
