Volleyball Wraps Up Great Lakes Crossover

Wooster falls to Alma, Mount St. Joseph

The College of Wooster volleyball team won its first set in the final day of the Great Lakes Crossover on Saturday.

However, it was all they could collect, taking a 3-1 loss to Alma College and a 3-0 loss to Mount St. Joseph University.

In the first match against Alma, Wooster jumped ahead with a 25-19 first set. The Scots set the tone early, stringing five points together to move ahead 6-3.

They pulled away by stringing together four straight points twice, first by going from 15-12 to 19-12, then later, 19-16 to 23-16. Junior Jordan Laraway collected on a kill in each stretch.

First-year Evelyn Hackney got the final kill of the set.

Fortunes went toward Alma the rest of the way. Wooster battled with 25-20 and 25-19 second and third sets before Alma closed the Scots out in the fourth at 25-10.

Laraway and senior Izzy Cozzie each collected eight kills to lead Wooster. First-year Erin Ellis's 15 assists were just ahead of classmate Kennedy Muhlenkamp's 14.

Sophomore Catherine Muzilla served three of Wooster's seven aces and had a team-high 18 digs.

In match two, Wooster got a little closer in each set, falling in three at 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.

Kills were more spread out as Laraway, Hackney, Kora Burill and Tamarra Talbert each wound up with four. Muhlenkamp led with 15 assists and three aces, while Natalie Hohman collected a team-high 10 digs.

Wooster started the third on a 5-0 run thanks to Muhlenkamp's three aces. However, the Lions took the same run at 16-all to pull ahead at 21-16 in what would be too big of a gap for Wooster to respond. Wooster got it to within two at 24-22 before the Lions scored the match point.

Wooster (1-3) returns home Wednesday when they host Capital University in its home opener at Timken Gymnasium.
