STEUBENVILLE – The College of Wooster women's soccer team had its closest contest to date on Wednesday but stayed undefeated with a 1-0 win over the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Wooster's lone goal came off the foot of sophomore
Caitlin Martin, who came off the bench and scored in the 33rd minute.
It was her first goal as a Fighting Scot and it came off a free kick from
Madeline Bruns. Bruns sent the ball into the box and after jockeying for possession, Martin sent a shot that found the back of the net.
Wooster's defense held strong throughout, led by keeper
Lucy Carlin, who collected a season-high four saves. The shutout was Wooster's fourth in five games this season.
Both teams took 13 shots, but Wooster had five on goal to four from Franciscan. Franciscan (0-4) keeper
Callie Giguere also made four saves.
Wooster remains perfect at 5-0. The Scots head to New York this weekend for two games, starting Saturday to take on Rochester Institute of Technology.
