The College of Wooster volleyball team split a pair of matches to begin play at the annual Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, hosted inside Timken Gymnasium. Wooster swept Pitt.-Greensburg in the opening match 25-12, 25-16, 25-17 before falling to Hiram College in straight sets 25-12, 25-9, 25-9.

In the first match against Pitt.-Greensburg (1-7), both teams were bitten by the error bug early, misfiring on nine of the first 12 points played.

However, the Scots (3-6) settled thanks to great service runs by seniorÂ

Catherine Muzilla to eventually build up a 16-6 lead. SophomoreÂ

Erin Ellis kept the service pressure going with respective aces on two of the final four points, including set point.Â

Wooster built an early second set advantage, but the Bobcats battled back with a 6-0 run for its first lead of the afternoon at 8-7. The Scots answered with a 6-0 run of their own and never looked back.

The final frame was more tightly contested as Pitt.-Greensburg stayed within a two points until the 10-9 mark. Kills from first-yearÂ

Natalie Hohman gave Wooster a little bit of breathing room. A pair of 3-0 runs ultimately helped the Scots cruise to the finish line.Â

Serving stole the show for the Scots, serving up 12 aces and putting a lot of pressure on the Bobcat transition offense. As a result, Wooster held Greensburg to -0.124 hitting percentage with only 12 kills. Both teams were solid defensively as the Scots held a slight 45-42 advantage in digs.Â

Burill recorded a team-best six kills and a season-best .462 hitting percentage. First-yearÂ
Kennedy Muhlenkamp posted the third double-double of her young career with an identical line of 10 digs and 10 assists. Ellis dished out 17 assists and Cozzie tossed out four service aces, matching her season high.

Mia Stohon had three kills to lead the stifled Bobcat offense. FreshmanÂ
Lilly Buckles had six assists and juniorÂ
Emily Hernandez posted a game-high 11 digs.Â

Facing off against Hiram (7-1) in the second match, Wooster stayed close early before the Terrier offense started clicking. A service error brought the Scots back within four points at 15-11, but Hiram closed out the first set on a 10-1 run.

The Terriers kept the momentum through the rest of the match.Â

Jordan Laraway and Burill combined to lead the Scots offense with three kills each. Ellis contributed six assists while Muhlenkamp had five. Muzilla was a bright spot for Wooster, leading the defense with 20 digs.Â

Kelly Hoffman had a double-double of 30 assists and 23 digs while seniorÂ

Hiram hit for a whopping .275 on the match (42 kills, 12 errors), including .333 in the final set. Meanwhile, Wooster hit -0.038 (13 kills to 17 errors). Aces were even at eight apiece. The Terriers also led in assists (38-13) and digs (65-44).
