The College of Wooster track and field team's three first-place finishes in the throws headlined the Fighting Scots' season-opener on Saturday afternoon at the Gault Recreation Center on campus.
Senior
Evie Sanford swept the throws, measuring 46 feet, 7.25 inches in the weight throw and 37 feet, 1.25 inches in the shot put. Sanford's weight throw was a little under two feet shy of a collegiate-best. Sanford's top mark in the weight throw was the best in Saturday's field by three feet, five inches.
Classmate
Rob Mays III went 44 feet, 4 inches to take first in the shot put. The senior's top mark was a little over four feet off his collegiate-best and was the top mark in Saturday's field by a over three feet.
Wooster's strongest showing came in the 800 meters, where the Scots had a one-two finish. First-year
Max Kollhoff's 2:07.60 was backed up by senior
Reese Johnson's 2:08.65. First-year
Tyler Frye (2:09.37) and senior
Henry Schneiderman (2:18.54) had top-five finishes for the Scots. Senior
Sophia Mellis, who joined the team for the first time, debuted with the runner-up time of 2:29.48 in the women's 800 meters.
Zephan Deal's junior year started with runner-up status in the high jump. Deal cleared the crossbar at 5 feet, 8.75 inches. Senior
Anthony Gomes, making his Wooster track and field debut, posted the third-place distance of 18 feet, 9 inches in the long jump.

Anaya Brady's clearance of 4 feet, 5 inches was third in the high jump, as was sophomore
Gracyn Zerby's 7 feet, 4.5 inches in the pole vault. Junior
Claire Davis posted the fifth-place mark of 13 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump.

The all-Wooster men's 3,000 meters saw senior
Joe Ahmann lead the quartet of Scots with a 9:31.56. Senior

Grant Mentzer (9:48.84), and sophomore
Basil Keck (9:55.81) rounded out the field.
Individually, senior
Jake George's 56.89 was third in the 400 meters, and right behind was Sentieri with a time of 57.52. Later, junior
Nate Chartrand's 23.39 was third in the 200 meters and first-year
Aiden Faber rounded out the top-five at 24.35. Ahmann was fourth in the mile (4:36.19), first-year
Aubrey Duggan was fourth in the 400 meters (1:13.64), and junior
Reeve Helvoigt crossed at 5:55.10 in the mile for fifth.

Jalen Mitman, and Chartrand – all two-sport team members (men's soccer) – led the Scots in the men's 4x400 relay with the fourth-place time of 3:47.90.
Wooster's men placed second with 82.5 points, trailing Wittenberg University's 118.5 points. Wittenberg (121) points and Kenyon College (65 points) ranked ahead of Wooster's 54 points in the women's standings.
Wooster is home again next Saturday, hosting Denison University and Kenyon. Field events on Jan. 24 start at noon with track events slated to commence at 2:30 p.m.
