Senior Salute - Matt Kaley

Kaley is member of swimming and diving team

Throughout the spring semester we are highlighting our senior Fighting Scots with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is swimming and diving's Matt Kaley. Kaley is a communication studies and global media and digital studies major.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster because of the swimming and diving team. Coach Rob Harrington runs an excellent program. I have been lucky to be part of it for four years.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being part of a community of like-minded people has been greatly meaningful to me. I would not trade it for anything.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Taking third at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships as a first-year was very memorable. It was the highest Wooster had placed at NCAC Championships in around 20 years. It felt special to be a contributor to a historic team like that.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part of being a student-athlete at Wooster is committing yourself to a rigorous training regimen and accomplishing all your goals as a result of your hard work.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am part of Lambda Pi Eta communication honors society, I lifeguard at the college pool, and I will commentate on baseball and softball games this spring.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Denise Bostdorff has made the biggest impact on me as my Independent Study advisor. Her wide knowledge of rhetorical theory is invaluable to my I.S.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way, and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: I want to give a shoutout to everyone who works at Lowry Center. All the employees work so hard and are very friendly. I always enjoy wishing them a good morning when I swipe in.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am doing a rhetorical analysis of Riley Gaines' rhetoric surrounding transgender athletes' inclusion in women's sports.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Swimming and diving training trips in Florida over winter break are challenging but rewarding. These trips involve a lot of hard work in the pool, but the relaxation and time on the beach make it worth it.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: If I could give first-year me advice, I would tell them to work ahead on assignments more.
