Wooster Unable to Keep Pace with John Carroll

Scots fall 91-78 at Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center

John Carroll University utilized a sizable shot differential caused by offensive rebounds and turnovers to turn away The College of Wooster men's basketball team 91-78 on Wednesday evening at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

While Wooster did much better in the turnover department than the first meeting with John Carroll, that, plus 12 offensive rebounds by the Blue Streaks, ultimately led to 19 more field-goal attempts for the hosts. Both teams were in the same ballpark with shooting percentages, as Wooster connected at 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field and John Carroll came in at 43.8 percent (35-of-80).

Junior Quincy Jones scored Wooster's first six points of the night, displaying an arsenal of low post moves in the process. His first bucket was a left-handed lay-in, then he scored on a lob down low from senior Jaiden Cox-Holloway. Jones' third field goal came on a staple turnaround jumper from about five feet out.

First-year Tommy Vaughn Jr. was the spark during Wooster's best stretch of the first half, as the Scots scored on three straight possessions to close with 21-16 with 12:22 on the clock. Vaughn Jr. knocked down a one-dribble pullup, which got the first-year by a closing-out Blue Streak defender. Next, he beat the Blue Streaks to the rim on the drive. On the third bucket, senior EJ Kapihe found classmate Isaac Roeder at the rim.

Wooster's momentum was short-lived as John Carroll responded with a 12-0 run to take a 33-16 lead. Sophomore Breckman Oakley's drive stopped the run momentarily before John Carroll All-American Luke Chicone beat the Scots to the rim on a pair of driving layups.

Cox-Holloway's 10-1 second-half run had Wooster within 65-51 with 13:35 to go. Oakley found the senior open for a triple to start the stretch, and Vaughn Jr. dished off to Cox-Holloway for a second 3-pointer later in the run. Wooster's defense recorded several big stops, as Vaughn Jr. tied Chicone up on a drive for a steal and Oakley swatted away Mike Lamirand's 3-pointer from the wing.

Cox-Holloway scored a team-high 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. He had a double-double with 10 rebounds and passed out five assists. Jones gave the Scots a pair of 20-point scorers with 22 points. Jones made 9-of-13 field goals and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Oakley and Roeder scored 11 points each.

Chicone went 11-of-18 from the floor for a game-high 27 points. He came close to a triple-double with eight assists and seven rebounds. Kasey Hunt poured in 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting for John Carroll.

John Carroll ran its record to 15-4, 7-3 North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster is now 6-13, 3-7 NCAC.

Next, Div. III's two winningest teams square off for the 133rd time on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Timken Gymnasium. Wittenberg University enters Saturday's contest with a 13-5, 6-3 NCAC record.
