Three-point shooting and turnovers provided most of the separation between NCAA Div. III's two winningest teams on Saturday night, and it was Wittenberg University coming out on top in both en route to a 78-53 win over The College of Wooster men's basketball team at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
Wittenberg's
Kyle Kenney knocked down three triples in the opening minutes as part of four straight 3-pointers that were hit by the Tigers during their 14-0 run. Senior
Isaac Roeder was fouled on a drive and hit both free throws to stop the run.
Senior
Carter Warstler provided a bit of a lift following Roeder's free throws. Warstler made a nice driving layup and finished the old-fashion three-point play at the charity stripe with 13:45 left in the opening stanza. Warstler added another field goal on the ensuing possession to pull Wooster within 17-9 at 12:54.
Wooster's bigs found success down low early in the second half, scoring on three straight possessions following the under-16 media timeout. Senior
Jaiden Cox-Holloway made a floating hook shot, then junior
Quincy Jones hit a pair of floaters on consecutive possessions.
Later in the second half, Wooster strung together an 8-0 run. Roeder connected to start the run, then senior
EJ Kaphie stuck with a play for a stick back. First-year
Tommy Vaughn Jr. found Kaphie down low for the Scots' next bucket, then Warstler hit a floater after taking a charge on the defensive end.
Roeder scored 15 points for Wooster on 5-of-9 shooting. His six rebounds trailed senior
Jaiden Cox-Holloway by one for the team lead. Jones and Warstler had nine points each.
Wooster shot 42.2 percent (19-of-45) for the game. All 19 of the Scots' field goals were scored from inside the paint.
Wittenberg's Kenney scored 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, which included a 4-of-5 night beyond the arc.
Noah Frayer was next in the scoring column with 16 points.
Scott Dawson turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Wittenberg shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) for the game and was an electric 11-of-22 on 3-pointers. The Tigers scored 22 points off the Scots' 14 turnovers.
Wittenberg won for just the second time in the last 11 meetings with Wooster. Wooster now leads the all-time series between Div. III's two winningest teams 70-62.
Wittenberg is now 10-2 and 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster's record is now 4-9, 1-2 NCAC.
Next, Wooster hosts Kenyon College (7-5, 1-2 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
