Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wooster's Last Lengthy Winning Streak Snapped

Fighting Scots' run against Owls stopped at 63

The College of Wooster men's basketball team caught fire in the final 65 seconds, but the deficit was too great to overcome in Wednesday's 80-75 loss to Kenyon College at Timken Gymnasium. Wooster's remarkable 63-game series winning streak, which dated back to Jan. 5, 1996, was snapped with the loss.

Wooster trailed 75-60 with 1:05 remaining and hit five straight 3-pointers. Sophomore Breckman Oakley hit the first and knocked down two others during the final 65 seconds. His third triple of the stretch had Wooster within 79-72 with five seconds remaining. First-year Tommy Vaughn Jr. hit the other two, with the final one coming at the buzzer.

Kenyon missed three free throws in the final 1:21, but was able to comfortably ride its double-digit lead to the finish. The Owls led by double figures from the 8:25 mark of the second stanza until the closing seconds.

Kenyon led wire-to-wire. Wooster came close to taking the lead midway through the first stanza behind the play of senior Isaac Roeder. The guard hit a second-chance jumper in the paint to pull the Scots within 18-13 with 8:59 on the clock and hit again on the next trip down the floor to make it 18-15. Free throws by senior EJ Kapihe made it a five-point game at 25-20 with 5:24 to go before halftime.

Five was the closest Wooster got in the second half, and it came with 11:33 remaining when sophomore Si Kielian hit a 3-pointer. Senior Jaiden Cox-Holloway preceded the triple with his fourth steal of the night and a floating jumper.

Cox-Holloway led three Wooster players in double figures with 21 points, which were paired with five steals. Roeder followed with 15 points and led the Scots with eight rebounds. Vaughn Jr. passed out a team-high four assists. Thanks to the late triples, Oakley finished the night with 13 tallies in the scoring column.

Wooster shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) for the game and 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from beyond the arc.

Kenyon's Nicholas Graves led all players with 24 points. Jack Corrigan Conaty dropped in 23 points off the bench on 8-of-9 shooting. He hit 5-of-6 triples.

Kenyon shot 27-of-51 for 52.9 percent for the game and hit half of its 20 3-pointers.

Kenyon is now 8-5, 2-2 North Coast Athletic Conference on the year, while Wooster fell to 4-10, 1-4 NCAC.

Wooster remains at home on Saturday, Jan. 10 to take on Wabash College (9-4, 3-1 NCAC) at 3:15 p.m.
