The College of Wooster volleyball team could not overcome the play of Oberlin College sisters
Mara Geiger and
Kira Geiger in Wednesday's 25-19, 14-25, 25-23, 25-16 loss at the Yeowomen's Philips Gymnasium.
Wooster evened the match, aided by racing out to an 8-0 lead in set two. Senior
Jordan Laraway served up an ace following her set-opening kill, and sophomore
Ireland Oswick pinned a kill and block onto the second-set stat sheet in the opening run. Laraway fired off three consecutive aces following an Oberlin attack error to cap the early rout.
Wooster's set-two lead reached 12-1 behind the play of sophomore
Ava Hills, who made it 11-1 with a kill before teaming up with Oswick to block down one of
Kira Geiger's attacks. Wooster extended its lead back to 10 at 14-4, thanks to a service ace from sophomore
Kennedy Muhlenkamp. Later, a block by senior
Kora Burill and junior
MC Werth on
Mara Geiger pushed the set-two advantage back to double digits. Oswick's fourth kill of the set came on match point.
Earlier, Wooster was within three at 20-17 in the first set on Burill's block of
Kira Geiger. A kill from the Scots' senior again made it a three-point affair at 21-18. However, Oberlin closed out set one on a 4-1 run.
The Geiger sisters took over in set three, combining for nine kills, an ace, and a block. Wooster led 18-16 on an Oberlin service error, but the Yeowomen scored the next three points, two from
Mara Geiger on a kill and ace. Hills' kill tied set three at 19, while Wooster took a brief 21-20 lead on a bad Oberlin set. A Yeowomen service error tied the third at 22 before back-to-back Geiger kills made it set point for Oberlin.
Oberlin took charge early in set four, leading from 3-2 onward. The Yeowomen's key run was a 7-1 stretch that made it 16-8 once a Wooster attack went on the match log as an error.
The Geiger sisters combined for 33 of Oberlin's 50 kills on the night, and they led the Yeowomen to a .211 attack percentage.
Mimi Spangler passed out 43 assists to go with 12 digs.
Mary Ellen Lovelace paced Oberlin with 19 digs.
Wooster was led by junior
Catherine Muzilla's 18 digs and Laraway's five aces. Oswick led a balanced effort on the attack with six kills.
