Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Scots Celebrate Seniors, Down Presidents, 2-1

Jani scores twice for Wooster

On their special day, The College of Wooster field hockey team's seniors led the way, as the Fighting Scots beat Washington & Jefferson College 2-1 on Saturday morning at John P. Papp Stadium. The game was the program's annual senior day celebration game.

It was certainly a celebration for Naledi Jani, who scored both of Wooster's goals. The first came with time expired in the second quarter. Wooster earned a penalty corner with four seconds remaining and fired off two initial shots before Jani put away the rebound for the equalizer. Prior to Jani's goal, Wooster looked to senior Audrey McKenna for the tying score, and her initial shot was blocked. Wooster maintained possession inside the circle, getting the ball to senior Brooke Benjamin, with that shot saved by Grace Erhard.

Wooster wasted no time taking the lead in the third, scoring just 1:06 into the stanza. McKenna sent an on target shot to the cage that was redirected in off Jani's stick for the senior's fifth goal of the year.

Washington & Jefferson got its goal in the 22nd minute. Jessica Nakanishi scored when Megan Brackney fed a pass to the middle from the top of the circle.

Wooster senior Nono Kauffman made five saves in the contest, the biggest of which came in the 21st minute. Brackney went high following a penalty corner insert, and the Scots' senior 'keeper knocked the shot down with the blocker. Two of Kauffman's other four saves came in the second, which is when 17 of the game's 31 combined shots came.

Erhard made nine saves, four of which came in the third, keeping the Presidents' deficit at one.

Wooster certainly had more numerous opportunities, outshooting Washington & Jefferson 23-8, which included a 10-2 advantage post-halftime. The teams combined for 11 penalty corners.

Wooster is now 4-8 and 3-5 within the North Coast Athletic Conference. Washington & Jefferson dropped to 1-10, 1-7 NCAC.

Next, Wooster hosts Ohio Wesleyan University (12-4, 6-2 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 for its final home game of the season.
