One of Div. III's best at taking the ball away was at it again early during The College of Wooster's 69-23 loss at 14th-ranked John Carroll University on Saturday afternoon.
Wooster, which entered the weekend fourth nationally in turnovers gained, added two to its 2026 haul to reach 22 on the season. First-year defensive lineman
Jacob Dudek hit John Carroll quarterback
Tyler Green's arm on the game's first drive, resulting in a strip sack. First-year linebacker
Marky Floyd Fitzgerald recovered the fumble. Floyd Fitzgerald added a 31-yard interception late in the first quarter for Wooster's 14th pick of the season.
Wooster's 23 points are the second-most given up by the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion this fall. Wooster got on the board with 46 seconds remaining in the first half, as sophomore wide receiver
Landon Medrano made a diving catch in the end zone for a 13-yard reception.
Deep shots connected in the third quarter, setting up Wooster's second touchdown with 39 seconds remaining. First, sophomore quarterback
Damon Hooks found classmate
Brody Snyder on a 24-yard completion. A deep pass intended for first-year wide receiver
Breylon McDuffie drew a 15-yard pass interference flag, then Hooks went right by to McDuffie for a 36-yard connection. Junior running back
Austin Fancher raced into the end zone from there, scoring from four yards out to make it 49-13.
First-year receiver
Logan Hupp sprung free behind John Carroll's secondary early in the fourth, resulting in an easy 46-yard Hooks-to-Hupp touchdown completion. Later, sophomore
Nolan Hendricks booted a 64-yard punt that was downed inside John Carroll's 1-yard line. First-year defensive lineman
Brody Eckelbarger bottled up
Mickey Keller long enough for first-year linebacker
Anthony Nespeca to clean the tackle up in the end zone for Wooster's fourth-quarter safety.
Hooks completed 18-of-40 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Hupp's 46-yard touchdown reception led to the first-year leading the team in receiving at four catches and 89 yards. Fancher rushed 12 times for 21 yards.
Defensively, senior
Brock Sivon led all players with 10 tackles, one more than junior
Cam Crago. Sophomore
Grady Harban added six stops from his corner position.
Green and
Bryce Tubin combined to go 22-of-27 passing for 397 yards and five touchdowns. The 22 completions were spread among 16 receivers.
Devin Taylor led John Carroll to 267 yards rushing, accounting for 161 of them on 10 carries and scoring two touchdowns in the process.
Adam LaCarte had four tackles and the Blue Streaks logged four sacks and two interceptions on the day, including a pix-six from
John Jones late in the fourth quarter.
John Carroll piled up 664 yards of offense, while Wooster's 337 marked the team's second-highest total of the year. John Carroll went 6-of-9 on third down and Wooster was held to 3-of-17 but did have a pair of fourth-down conversions.
John Carroll is now 6-1, 5-1 NCAC on the year. Wooster's record is now 2-5, 2-4 NCAC.
Next, Wooster hosts Wittenberg University (0-7, 0-6 NCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 31.
