Tenth-Ranked Ohio Wesleyan Defeats Wooster

Two final home games left for Scots

DELAWARE – The College of Wooster women's basketball team ended their stretch of playing three consecutive ranked teams in a row on Saturday, falling to tenth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan 68-57 on Saturday in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
 
Three players scored a game-high 14 points, including Wooster's Mackenzie RiccitelliAlyssa Griner and Maddie Ebbert led the charge for Ohio Wesleyan (20-2, 11-1 NCAC).
 
Ace Sturdivant scored 12 points and added seven rebounds. Pink Sturdivant scored 11, and senior Ella Biondi pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
In the first quarter, neither team could break away from the other, resulting in Wooster (10-13, 2-10 NCAC) holding a tight 16-15 lead. 
 
Ohio Wesleyan then embarked on a 7-1 run to begin the second quarter. Later, Emily Webb hit a 3-pointer to bring Wooster to within one at 25-24 with 2:49 remaining.
 
A small run to end the quarter gave the Battling Bishops a 29-24 lead at halftime. They stayed hot going into the third, beginning the quarter with a 10-2 run just three minutes into the quarter to from a 39-26 lead.
 
From there, Wooster struggled to cut Ohio Wesleyan's lead significantly. The 19-10 quarter gave the Bishops a 48-34 lead and despite Wooster taking the fourth quarter, 23-20, it was not enough to knock off the tenth ranked team.
 
Ohio Wesleyan took 23 more shots than the Scots, but both teams shot in the upper 30's in field goal percentage. Both teams took 14 3-pointers. Wooster made three, while Ohio Wesleyan made a pair. Finally, both teams shot about 60 percent from the foul line.
 
Ohio Wesleyan won the rebounding battle, 44-36, and outscored Wooster in the paint 48-24, as well as in second chance points, 16-1.
 
With two games left and the conference tournament taking shape, Wooster has a crucial matchup on Wednesday when they host Kenyon College at Timken Gymnasium. Kenyon, currently last in the NCAC, won the prior matchup, 72-60.
