Senior catcher
Colin Leslie upped the pickoff counter to eight, then junior third baseman
Zack Barienbrock walked off Allegheny College in the 10th inning, as The College of Wooster baseball team upped its winning streak to eight with its 8-7 victory on Thursday at Art Murray Field.
Sophomore second baseman
David Guldin lofted a triple into the right field corner to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning. Allegheny (6-5) intentionally walked the bases loaded to turn the lineup over to Barienbrock, a near-.500 hitter. He laced the winning single through the left side of the infield.
Wooster (10-2) rallied back to tie Thursday's game at seven in the eighth inning, turning to the intentional rundown for the tying run. First-year right fielder
Bennett Grossman was the one tasked with avoiding the tag until sophomore
Aidan Krantz sped home from third. Wooster had the winning run on third in the ninth, but a fly ball was tracked down by Allegheny's
Liam Irving to send the game to extras.
In the fifth, the Fighting Scots were able to capitalize on a Gators' miscue to take a 5-2 lead. First-year shortstop
Noah Lindberg reached on an error by Allegheny shortstop
Connor Kunkle to put two Wooster runners on the bases with one out. Barienbrock, who reached on a single up the middle, scored on a wild pitch to give Wooster a 3-2 lead. Junior first baseman
Koa Siu's double to the fence in left center scored Lindberg, and Wooster made it 5-2 when Leslie traded places with Siu on a hustle double to left.
Wooster's lead did not hold, as Allegheny strung together four hits in a five-batter span to start the sixth. A throwing error from the outfield on
Zach Miner's single enabled two Allegheny runners to move up an extra base. That proved costly, as both scored when Kunkle earned redemption with a go-ahead two-run single to left. However, Kunkle's greed was put to bed by Leslie, who threw out the Gators' shortstop when he broke for second late on the throw home.
Leslie caught Miner straying too far from first base in the fourth inning. The Gators' starting pitcher through a pitch from sophomore
Alex Eusebio would turn into a wild one, only for it to skip off the turf directly into Leslie's glove. In the seventh,
Liam Irvin was erased by Leslie at first base for the eighth pickoff of the year by the Scots' catcher.
First-year center fielder
Matt Herlick tied Thursday's battle between former conference rivals at one. The smooth-swinging left-hander launched his second collegiate homer over the right field fence.
Wooster took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Lindberg was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up 180 feet once sophomore designated hitter
Luke Rizzo deposited a single into right field. Lindberg scored when Siu reached on a fielder's choice.
Wooster threatened for more in the fourth inning, but Miner worked out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and shallow fly out to short center that was tracked down by Kunkle from his shortstop position.
Barienbrock went 3-for-6 with the winning RBI out of Wooster's leadoff spot. Leslie delivered a 3-for-5 day at the plate out of the fifth position of Wooster's lineup. Junior
Constantine Vernadakis collected his first win of the season, firing two shutout innings, during which he struck out three.
Miner led Allegheny, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. He allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings, but only two were earned.
Harrison Ashley took the loss to drop to 0-1.
Next, Wooster hosts Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg (7-4) in a three-game series this weekend at Art Murray Field. The series kicks off with Saturday's doubleheader, where first pitch is at noon.
