The College of Wooster baseball team rallied back again in the ninth to top Southwestern University 10-8 on Tuesday before falling 10-4 to Concordia University Texas on Wednesday.
The Fighting Scots (13-4) were at it again in the trip opener, scoring three times in the ninth. First-year shortstop
Noah Lindberg and senior designated hitter
Ryan Kramer placed singles into left field to start the inning. Lindberg and first-year pinch runner
Henry Dinges both scored on junior left fielder
Koa Siu's go-ahead two-run double to right center. Later, sophomore second baseman
Luke Rizzo's sacrifice fly added an insurance run.
In the bottom of the inning, first-year
Owen Sherrill fired a one-two-three inning. He is now 1-0 on the year after working 3 1/3 innings of relief. The right-hander allowed an unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
St. Patrick's Day's wild start saw the teams combine for seven runs in the first three innings. Wooster emerged with a 4-3 lead, thanks to Siu and senior catcher
Colin Leslie hitting back-to-back homers in the third inning. Leslie ran his homer streak to three straight games, during which he has four round trippers.
Leslie's second homer of the Texas opener put Wooster up 5-4 in the fifth. Southwestern's
Tres Organ's RBI single pushed the Pirates ahead 8-7 in the eighth.
Leslie and Siu combined to go 6-for-9 with four RBI, three homers, and three runs scored against Southwestern. Sophomore
James MacMillan started and allowed three runs on seven hits in three innings. Junior
Ben Tarpey was one of the relievers used, and he allowed a run on four hits in two innings.
Leslie stayed hot behind the dish, throwing out his fifth base stealer of the last six to try to swipe a base against the standout senior. Elsewhere, Rizzo turned an unassisted double play, and sophomore third baseman
Maanav Bhatt ended Southwestern's three-run first with an inning-ending two-for-one special.
Brandon Lang pounded out four hits for Southwestern and knocked in a pair.
Garrett Guinn dropped to 0-4 by allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Wooster's biggest bright spot against Concordia was Lindberg, who hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Junior first baseman
Zack Barienbrock singled prior to the blast, which had Wooster within 7-3.
Wooster pulled closer in the fourth, capitalizing on a Concordia miscue. Kramer reached on an error and scored when Bhatt reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning.
Sophomore
Alex Eusebio (0-1) started for Wooster against Concordia and worked six innings. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits and struck out three.
Lindberg had two of Wooster's seven hits against Concordia and drove in two.
Dayton Cliffe was the winning pitcher of Concordia's staff day pitching effort. He worked a scoreless inning and struck out two.
Samuel Ortiz led the Tornados lineup. He went 4-for-5 with three RBI.
Wooster has three more games left in Texas, starting with Friday's 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT game at East Texas Baptist University (13-6).
