The College of Wooster women's tennis team found themselves in several tough matches in their games played in Hilton Head, South Carolina this past week. They played to a 2-2 record across four games, moving to 5-6 on the season.
Wooster 6, St. Mary's College of Maryland 1
March 17
The women started their trip with a 6-1 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday.
The Scots almost swept doubles play but got the needed point after taking the No. 2 and No. 3 flights by the same score of 6-2.
Abby Williams and
Lauren Richmond teamed in the No. 2 flight, and
Kamila Kadirova and
Elyse Errington teamed at No. 3.
The No. 1 team of
Elizabeth Meiners and
Sasha Riley almost made it a sweep but fell in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
The 3-5 flights secured the win for Wooster. Riley came back for a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3, while Richmond swept her opponent at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.
Jade Adkins sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Williams won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, while Kadirova took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6. Meiners dropped her match at the No. 1 flight, 6-3, 6-2.
North Carolina Wesleyan 5, Wooster 2
March 17
Wooster failed to secure the Tuesday sweep in its second match of the day, falling to North Carolina Wesleyan University, 5-2.
After getting swept in doubles play, Wooster took two points in singles play. First, Riley won by retirement in the No. 3 slot before Meiners capped the match with a comeback win at the No. 1 flight, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7).
The rest of the matches went to straight sets. At the No. 2 flight, Williams tried to force a third set but came up short, 6-4, 7-5.
Wooster 4, Schreiner 3
March 18
The women's tennis team came back after losing the doubles point to take a 4-3 victory over Schreiner University in its lone match on Wednesday.
While Williams and Riley took a 6-3 win in the No. 1 flight, Wooster could not secure the point, which included Meiners and Richmond falling in the No. 2 spot 7-6 (7).
However, the Scots would overcome the setback by taking the first four flights in singles play, winning each in straight sets. Meiners was a highlight in the No. 1 flight, taking a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Williams secured a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2; Riley earned a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3, and Richmond won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 flight.
The other two flights went to a 10-point third set, but Wooster couldn't come out on top in either. Adkins fell at No. 5, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (4), and Errington fell at No. 6, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6).
College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 4, Wooster 3
March 19
Wooster split four singles flights that went to a 10-point third set in a match that could have swung either way in a 4-3 loss to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) on Thursday.
Wooster dropped the doubles point to begin the match, although Williams and Richmond claimed a 6-0 win at the No. 2 flight.
In singles play, the Flames took the first decision in the No. 4 flight, while Kadirova gave Wooster its first point with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 6 flight.
From there, Riley was on the wrong end of a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (6) loss in the No. 2 flight, while Errington gave Wooster a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (8) win in the No. 5 flight.
Richmond pulled out a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6) comeback win in the No. 3 flight, leaving the match to be determined by the No. 1 flight. Meiners opened with a first set win but could not pull off the victory in a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) loss.
The Scots will make a stop at Averett University on Saturday before returning home to prepare for North Coast Athletic Conference play.
