The College of Wooster outdoor track and field teams began the outdoor portion of the season on the annual spring break trip to participate in the three-day Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, hosted at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Â
The multi-divisional meet proved to be tough competition for the Fighting Scots, competing against teams all the way up to Div. I, but several individuals turned in top-10 finishes or career-best performances.
Â
Junior
Ellie Fox won the open long jump competition with a mark of 15 feet, 5.5 inches on her very first attempt. Sophomore
Breena Katz also landed in the top-10 in the same event, placing ninth with a final leap of 12 feet, 2.25 inches after fouling the first two attempts.
Â
Continuing Wooster's strong team efforts in the open long jump were senior
Anthony Gomes, junior
William Harris II and senior
Henry Schneiderman. Gomes placed seventh with 19 feet, 5.5 inches, Harris took 10th with 18 feet, 8.75 inches, while Schneiderman was just behind Harris II in 14th with 18 feet, 8.25 inches.
Â
First-year
Max Kollhoff had the best individual finish on the men's side with fifth-place in the open 800-meter run as he crossed the finish line in a 1:59.94 personal-best time.
Â
Other individual top-10 finishes came from senior
Essaie Mezmur and first-year
Aubrey Duggan. Mezmur matched Gomes' top field result with his own seventh-place finish, this time in the open high jump, with a cleared height of 6 feet even. Duggan had the top result on the track for the women's team with eighth place in the open 400-meter run in 1:08.29.
Â
In the open 400 on the men's side, first-year
Nanjappa Apana placed 15th in 53.26. Senior
Zane DeMercurio had another 15th-place finish for the Scots with his 9:26.00 in the collegiate 3,000-meter run.
Â
Senior
Spencer DeHart and senior
Rob Mays III were the other two Scots to turn in career-best efforts. DeHart went 5:14.61 for his best 1-mile time, placing 19th in the open competition. Meanwhile, Mays used a top hammer throw of 151 feet, 11 inches to finish 17th in the collegiate competition and improve upon his own fourth-place mark in the event's history. Mays also placed 22nd in the collegiate discus throw with a launch of 133 feet, 3 inches. Both hammer and discus marks place Mays inside the top-50 nationally in their respective events.
Â
A pair of seniors in
Sylvia Direnzo and
Anaya Brady took to the track on the second day of competition in the collegiate 5,000-meter event and the open 800, respectively. Direnzo placed 20th in the 5k in 22:47.66 and Brady took 22nd in the 800 in 2:46.32.
Â
Only two relay teams raced throughout the three-day event with the top result coming in the men's collegiate 4x800-meter event. Kollhoff, senior
Reese Johnson, sophomore
Andrew Rombach, and DeMercurio combined for an eighth-place finish in 8:26.47.
