The College of Wooster baseball team rallied from four runs down to beat Ohio Wesleyan University 10-9 to win its North Coast Athletic Conference opener, then blasted the Battling Bishops 15-2 in the nightcap on Saturday at Littick Field.
Senior designated hitter
Ryan Kramer clubbed two early homers for Wooster (17-6, 2-0 NCAC), the second of which gave the Fighting Scots a 4-3 lead in the third.
Matt Spencer answered with a two-run double to swing the advantage right back to Ohio Wesleyan (8-10, 0-2 NCAC) in the bottom of the frame, then the Battling Bishops tacked on four in the fourth.
Wooster's comeback started in the fifth from the top of the lineup. Junior first baseman
Zack Barienbrock's leadoff single was followed by a two-run homer off the bat of first-year shortstop
Noah Lindberg, who now has six round trippers on the year. Lindberg's blast pulled the Scots within 9-7. That is where the score stood until the eighth. First-year right fielder
Owen Sherrill led off that inning with a double down the left field line. First-year pinch runner
Bennett Grossman scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of junior left fielder
Koa Siu. Ohio Wesleyan first baseman
Matt Spencer fielded the ball in time to get Grossman at the plate, but a bad throw enabled the Scots' first-year to pull the team within 9-8.
In the ninth, Barienbrock drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on Kramer's double to center field. An RBI ground out off the bat of senior catcher
Colin Leslie tied the game at nine. Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting the tying run to scoring position before senior right-hander
Jack Spring got
Carter Vilevac to fly out and
Michael Malone to pop out to send the game to extras.
In the 10th, sophomore
Maanav Bhatt started Wooster's rally with a two-out single to right. He later scored on Barienbrock's opposite-field single. Junior
Constantine Vernadakis nailed down the save, working around a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame.
Spring went to 2-0 on the year. The right-hander was sharp, striking out five in 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief in support of junior starter
Michael Scarpelli. Vernadakis' save was his second of the year. He struck out one during the scoreless 10th.
Logan Schnell (1-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a run in his lone inning of work.
Kramer went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the opener. Wooster's top three in Barienbrock, Lindberg, and Kramer combined to finish 8-for-15 with seven of Wooster's nine RBI.
Wooster's lead was 4-0 when its turn at the dish was over in the second. Siu's two-run single up the middle was the big hit until Lindberg sent a two-run single through the left side of the infield that made it 11-0 in the seventh.
Kramer followed Lindberg with a single down the left field line that scored Barienbrock and gave Wooster a dozen runs in the game. Later in the inning, Sherrill cleared bases that were full of Scots with a double up the alley in right center.
Sophomore
Dame Frayne is now 4-1 on the year. The right-hander went the distance, firing a four-hitter. He struck out four.
Parker Tomlin was the losing pitcher, falling to 3-1. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
Sherrill's three hits and three RBI led Wooster's starting nine in the nightcap. Wooster had five players with multiple hits and four players with at least two RBI. Siu matched Sherrill for the team-high in RBI at three.
Jack Bates went 2-for-3 with a run for Ohio Wesleyan in game two.
Wooster is idle until DePauw University (12-5, 0-0 NCAC) makes the trip to Art Murray Field for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4. First pitch is at noon.
