OBERLIN - The College of Wooster's outdoor track and field teams competed in the unscored Oberlin Invitational on Friday and Saturday, hosted by Oberlin College on the Kahn Track.
Wooster walked away with one event champion, seven other podium finishes and multiple national top-50 marks throughout the two-day competition. In her first action of the outdoor season, senior
Evie Sanford set the standard for the rest of her season by capturing the discus throw with a toss of 122 feet, 3 inches. That mark ranks 35th nationally at the time of the meet.
The best result on the track came from senior
Amy Gabrovsek who was the runner-up in the 400-meter run in a career-best time of 1:02.47. Gabrovsek also had junior
Ellie Fox feeling the personal-best magic as the junior took seventh in the same event with a time of 1:04.42.
Perhaps the story of the day, however, was sophomore
Francis Nwokonko turning heads in his first collegiate meet. Nwokonko competed in three events across the two days and took third in each event, even posting a mark on the national performance list.
His leap of 43 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump ties for 32nd in Div. III at the time of the meet, and his heat-winning time of 15.57 in the 110-meter hurdles was just outside the top-50 nationally. The sophomore also leapt 20 feet, 6 inches in the long jump for the final third-place finish.
Senior
Rob Mays III continued his strong performance in the hammer throw with yet another career-best mark for the second consecutive week, this time at 157 feet even. Mays was just one foot shy of tying for second in program history but further improved upon his own fourth-place mark.
Additionally, Mays now ties for 45th in the nation in the event. The senior also put together season-best tosses of 133 feet, 11 inches to finish fourth in the discus throw and 42 feet, 2 inches for seventh in the shot put.
Senior
Essaie Mezmur and first-year
Max Kollhoff were the other two Scots with podium finishes. Mezmur leapt a season-best 6 feet, 1.5 inches for third place in the high jump while Kollhoff went 2:01.13 for third in the 800-meter run.
Junior
Zephan Deal finished just a couple spots behind Mezmur in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 7.75 inches, andnot far behind Kollhoff in the 800 was senior
Reese Johnson in fourth place in 2:01.30.
Moving over to field events for the first time in his career, junior
Yann Kariningufu finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 6 inches. Meanwhile, the women's team found most of its success in the field events as well.
Senior
Sarah Hiestand and sophomore
Gracyn Zerby placed sixth and eighth in the pole vault as they cleared 9 feet, 5.5 inches and 7 feet, 11.75 inches, respectively. In her track season debut, sophomore
