Wooster Tops Wittenberg by 20, Clinches at Least 2 Seed for Tourney

Scots hang 11 goals on Tigers in first period

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team hung a goal a minute on Wittenberg University early, then eased off the throttle in Tuesday night's 22-2 rout of the Tigers at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster, now 14-1 and 5-1 within the North Coast Athletic Conference, clinched at least the No. 2 seed for next week's four-team conference tournament with the win. The Scots wrap up conference play and the regular season with Saturday's noon game at DePauw University (6-9, 2-3 NCAC).

Senior Brynne Snaguski started Tuesday's onslaught 39 seconds into the game, and it was 4-0 3:08 into the contest when senior Lizzie Hardy added her name to the scoring column for the first time. Wooster's seniors scored the opening four goals, as Sophia Mellis and Priya Nehria got in on the torrid start, thanks to assists from Snaguski and sophomore Mizan Jacobs, respectively.

Wooster tagged Wittenberg for 11 goals in the opening quarter alone, with seven of the team's 15 field players who saw action joining the goal log. Jacobs, first-year Edi Fisher, and sophomore Rowan Pilon joined the quartet of seniors with first-period scores.

Pilon was the leading facilitator, passing out five assists to go with two goals for a co-team-high seven-point night. Jacobs went the other way for her seven points, scoring five times and passing out a pair of helpers. In all, Wooster passed out assists on 13 of its 22 goals and was north of 60 percent in the shooting percentage column.

While Wittenberg did manage to get off 12 shots, a majority of Tigers possessions ended in turnovers. Wooster was credited with 15 caused ones on the night, with that matching the team's season-high from its win over John Carroll University. Ten players contributed to the 15, with senior Amelia Knaysi's three leading the way.

Elsewhere, Hardy, Mellis, and Snaguski netted three goals each. Of note, Snaguski pulled within five goals of a top-10 career mark in the program annals and hit 50 for the season. Hardy, who became the first Scot to hit the century mark in draw controls in two separate seasons in Saturday's win at Ohio Wesleyan University, won seven of the Scots' 17. Senior Sidney O'Rourke added four to surpass alumna Kenzie Morris for the fourth-most in program history.

Sophomore Cassidy Driscoll and first-year Nicole McCalla scooped three groundballs each. Junior Audrey Richardson started in goal and made two saves, while sophomore Taylor Noe allowed just one goal in a little over a half of action between the pipes.

Aubrey Stager had six draw controls and two groundballs for Wittenberg.

Wooster tripled Wittenberg in shots, 36-12 and put 30 of them on goal compared to just three for the Tigers. Wooster limited the miscues, only committing 12 turnovers. The Scots went 14-of-16 on clears and held the Tigers to under 50 percent at 8-of-17.
