Game Recap: Baseball |

Wooster Swept at John Carroll

Kramer now at 180 RBI

A pivotal doubleheader did not go The College of Wooster baseball team's way, as John Carroll University took the lead in the sixth inning of both games of the Blue Streaks' Tuesday sweep at Schweickert Field. John Carroll won game one 9-6 and the nightcap 7-5.

Senior first baseman Ryan Kramer knocked in three Fighting Scots in game one to reach 180 RBI for his career, the ninth-most in program history and top total since three-time All-American Jamie Lackner graduated with 193 in 2017. Kramer made it 1-0 with a single to left field in the first, tied the game at five with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and pulled Wooster within 9-6 via an eighth-inning double.

First-year right fielder Owen Sherrill's solo homer had Wooster within 5-4 in the fifth. Earlier, first-year center fielder Matt Herlick doubled to right center to give Wooster a 2-1 lead in the second.

Ethan Glossa's two-run double down the left field line held as the go-ahead hit in the sixth. George Haracz found the alley in right center for a double that upped John Carroll's lead to 8-5 and he scored when Chris Bach followed with a double of his own.

Sophomore James MacMillan took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits while only recording one out. Junior Constantine Vernadakis did his part to give Wooster a chance, firing 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out four in the process.

Michael Perry moved to 4-1. He allowed a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. Austin Miller nailed down his fourth save, recording the final four outs for the Blue Streaks.

Brett Krugman's two-run homer was part of his 2-for-4 game one with three RBI. Kramer was Wooster's leader at the dish, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Sophomore designated hitter Luke Rizzo's eighth-inning solo homer got Wooster within two in the nightcap. Wooster had the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth, but Miller got the final out for his second save of the day.

Glossa again delivered the go-ahead sixth-inning knock, this time shooting the ball up the alley in right. Thomas Bates knocked in the insurance run with a double to right field.

Wooster led 2-0 in the second following a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and scoring a run on a double play ball. It was 3-0 when junior left fielder Koa Siu lifted a fly ball deep enough to right to score junior third baseman Zack Barienbrock in the third.

Junior Michael Scarpelli (4-5) was the game-two loser, allowing two runs on a hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Noah Trojanowski got the win, recording the final two outs in the top of the sixth.

Glossa went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Rizzo led Wooster, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Wooster fell to 23-15, 6-8 NCAC with the losses and was knocked out of contention for a spot in next week's four-team NCAC Tournament. John Carroll improved to 21-12, 8-6 NCAC.

Wooster has two more games left, with those taking place Saturday, May 2 at Wabash College (11-25, 4-10 NCAC). First pitch is at noon.
