Cuda Wooster’s Bright Spot Against OWU

Battling Bishops down Fighting Scots 21-9

Sophomore Domenic Cuda caused seven turnovers and scooped up six groundballs in The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team's 21-9 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.

Prior to Wooster's (8-4, 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) star sophomore defender working towards a very typical game in terms of stats, sophomore Jack Holub cleaned up a groundball and fired in a goal to tie the conference battle at one with 12:34 on the first-quarter clock. The goal marked Holub's 49th of the year. Of note, coupled with Kellogg's 49 goals in 2024, Wooster has two players on the active roster with at least 49 goals during a season of their careers for the first time in over three decades.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with consecutive scores before senior Lane Kellogg scored his 150th collegiate goal, becoming the first Fighting Scot to hit that mark since Tom Bennett in 1993. The Battling Bishops answered the milestone goal with seven straight scores before senior Austin Jourde connected with sophomore Will Crane for a Scot-up goal in the final 30 ticks of the first half.

Kellogg's first goal of the night was set up by the Scots' standout longpoles playing all the way up on the ride. Senior Sutton Ursillo deflected a pass from Ohio Wesleyan 'keeper Jason Mosher. Mosher recovered in time to make the save on first-year Owen Thompson's initial shot, but there were no Battling Bishop defenders in the area in support, which enabled Kellogg to go for the easy clean-up score.

Wooster's best stretch came at the start of the fourth, as the Scots scored three of the first four goals in the period.  First-year Ian Marsland got the stretch started, while Kellogg and Thompson were the other scorers. Thompson's goal had Wooster within 17-9 with 8:25 to go.

Cuda's six groundballs marks 100 for the year. It is just the fourth time in program history a Scot has hit the century mark since the NCAA started officially recognizing groundballs as a tracked statistic in 1999. The seven caused turnovers moved Cuda past two-time All-American Casey Steffen's senior-year total, and Steffen's 86 from his junior year is the lone total Cuda has remaining to surpass for the single-season program record.

Kellogg's two goals and one assist upped the points total to 76 for the year, one more than he had two seasons ago. It is Wooster's top output since Andy Fox's single-season school record 89 in 1991.

First-year Braden Popper matched Cuda for the team-high in groundballs at six. Sophomore Case Lowery made nine saves.

Henry Ross scored five goals and passed out two assists to lead the Bishops' offense. Noah Citek went 15-of-19 on faceoffs and scooped up the groundball on nearly all of them, with his 15 leading all players. Mosher totaled nine saves.

Ohio Wesleyan doubled up Wooster 58-29 on shots and had 56 groundballs to the Scots' 34.

Next, Wooster is at Denison University (5-7, 3-1 NCAC) for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, April 11.
