The College of Wooster softball team pulled through with a 7-5 game one win over Denison University on Sunday, but fell short in game two, 7-3, to conclude its season on Sunday.
Â
Wooster (19-17, 6-8 NCAC) needed a sweep to earn a spot in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Instead, Denison (17-19, 8-6 NCAC) earns the third seed and Kenyon College the fourth seed (19-21, 7-7 NCAC).
Â
The Scots kept hope alive with a satisfying game one win, with sophomoreÂ
Jillian Meszaros throwing a complete game for her 14th win of the season, allowing just two earned runs.
Â
Offensively, the Scots jumped out early with a 1-0 lead in the first after an RBI single fromÂ
Ella McCabe.
Â
Wooster added on in the fourth with three more runs. JuniorÂ
Jasmine Mueller added an RBI hit of her own, while an error scoredÂ
Lynnsey Delio beforeÂ
Tori Conner grounded out to score Mueller.
Â
Sage Lammlein answered Denison's run in the fifth with a run-scoring single to right field.Â
Wooster added two more in the sixth with an almost inside the parker from
Emma Hetkey. She had to be satisfied with a RBI triple and was later brought home by a single fromÂ
Julia Jennings.
Â
Denison got two back in the seventh before Meszaros shut the door on the Big Red.
Â
Hetkey led the way in game one with a 2-for-4 performance while six different Scots recorded an RBI.
Â
In game two, the Scots were answering Denison's blows through the third inning before Denison broke the game open with a two-run fourth which made it 4-2. Wooster had recorded the first two outs of the inning before a walk and three consecutive singles changed the trajectory of the game.
Â
Denison starterÂ
Madilyn Moffitt held Wooster to just one additional run through the final four frames, which came about thanks to an RBI double from McCabe in the fifth.
Â
Denison added on with another two runs in the sixth, including a solo home run from Moffitt, as Wooster could not match the firepower of the Big Red.
Â
Conner pitched 5.2 innings and gave up five earned runs in the loss. Meszaros suffered two earned runs in the other 1.1 innings pitched and allowed both her inherited runners to score in the fourth.
Â
Moffitt struck out five and gave up three earned runs in the complete game. Jennings and McCabe each collected two hits to lead the Wooster offense.
Â
At 19-17, Wooster finishes above .500 for the first time since the 2021 season, where the team went 22-10.
Â
In addition, the seniors leave their mark all over the program record books.
Â
Of note, Jennings and Hetkey finish second and third, respectively, in career batting average with Jennings finishing at .389 and Hetkey .387. However, Jennings can claim the hit record with 187 hits.
Â
Cate Barkdoll's 107 RBI is the new number to beat, while Jennings sits second with 97.Â
Â
Finally, Hetkey improved her stolen base lead, finishing with 71, while Jennings' 391 assists put her atop that career fielding list.
