Last year, The College of Wooster volleyball team's home slate started with a thrilling reverse sweep of Capital University. This year, it was the Comets charging back, downing the Fighting Scots in five sets, 20-25, 27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-12, on Wednesday evening at the Capital Center.
Wooster closed set one on an 11-4 run, fueled by three attack and two Capital setting errors. Wooster tied the frame at 17 on senior
Jordan Laraway's second kill of the night and pulled ahead on a Capital attack error. Wooster's lead reached three on sophomore
Kennedy Muhlenkamp's ace and again hit three when a swing from first-year
Claire Buchholz went down for a kill at 20-17. Laraway's first ace of the night at 22-17 put the set out of reach for the Comets.
Lengthy runs continued for Wooster, as the Scots seized control of set three early with an eight-point scoring spree. A kill from sophomore
Caitlin Walsh-Knouff pulled Wooster within 5-4, and the score was 11-5 Scots when the fourth Comet attack error of the run went on the match ledger. Sophomore
Ava Hills was active at the net during the run, stuffing
Chloe Preocanin twice at the net for solo blocks. Wooster's lead reached eight at 17-9 when an attack from sophomore
Tamarra Talbert went down for a kill, and eight was the margin of lead again following a Muhlenkamp kill two rallies later. Wooster hit a blistering .393 in the third set, led by four Muhlenkamp kills from the setter position.
Preocanin's serves rallied the Comets back in set four as she fired off four straight aces to turn a 12-9 Capital deficit into a 14-12 lead. Wooster led 21-19 in the fourth following a bad set by
Sidney Hains, but three straight points by the Comets gave the hosts a 22-21 lead.
Cici Harris powered the attack with six kills, two of which came late in the frame, and ultimately were among the deciding points.
Two Harris aces enabled Capital to open a 7-1 lead in the fifth, as the Comets strung together a decisive 6-0 run. Wooster was within 12-9 on junior
MC Werth's kill, and three was the Scots deficit again at 13-10 following a Buchholz kill. Buchholz's ace had the Scots within two at 13-11, and two was again the deficit when Walsh-Knouff connected on the attack.
Walsh-Knouff and Werth combined for 24 of Wooster's 58 kills. Junior
Catherine Muzilla kept 18 Capital attacks alive with digs. Talbert led the block with four on the night, while Muhlenkamp distributed 41 assists. Wooster hit .218 for the match.
Abby Reed's 13 kills paced three Comets in double figures.
Ava Knight posted a double-double at 14 digs and 10 kills, with the digs ranking as the team-high. The Comets hit .149 for the match.
Wooster is now 3-3 on the year, while Capital is 1-4.
