Scots Strike First in Granville

Wooster falls in NCAC opener at Denison

Senior Audrey McKenna scored in the second minute to give The College of Wooster the early lead, but host Denison University answered 14 seconds later and went on to top the Fighting Scots 8-1 at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

On its scoring play, Wooster worked the ball down the left side of the field. Senior forward Naledi Jani tracked down a played-ahead loose ball outside the circle, navigated around a Denison defender, then left a pass for McKenna. McKenna cut in and scored from 10 yards out for her first goal since 2024.

Denison immediately went on the attack, with Scots' senior goalkeeper Nono Kauffman stopping a shot from Lulu Keil. Unfortunately, the rebound hit off the back of a Scots' defender, leaving Emma Gebhart in position for the tap-in score. Gebhart scored again in the seventh minute. On that score, Denison jumped a pass deep in Wooster's end, leading to the Big Red's top forward having an open tap-in at the far post. It was 3-1 just shy of the eighth minute, as Keil joined the scoring surge, blasting one in from a step inside the circle.

Denison grew its lead to 7-1 at halftime. Gebhart, Keil, and Maggie Lamb all had multi-goal afternoons by halftime. Lamb found the cage for the fourth time in the opening 90 seconds of the fourth to make it 8-1.

Kauffman turned away 15 Denison shots in the game to finish a save shy of a career-high. Denison fired off 30 shots in the contest. Wooster finished with three.

Denison is now 2-2, 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster dropped to 1-3, 0-1 NCAC.

Next, Wooster hosts Allegheny College (2-3, 0-0 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23.
